Maokai is better suited for the support role. If you see you already have a tank, and you need to fill the support role, but your team is very squishy, then take maokai. He can be durable and support well, though his tanking is not quite on-par with his supporting. Maokai isn't a horrible champion, but he could use some buffing. I think he'd be a good 4th of 5th pick when you need to fill a tanky support role and you need to counter enemies somehow.
he tanks by taking everyone dmg, snareing and knockback or w/e his other skill is, but u cud say the same things for support, he's an ap tank, more then swain is an ap tank
You don't need a taunt to tank.
You just need a snare to catch the enemy, and to be able to get into the center of attention.
Maokai's Twisted Advance is perfect for this.
Arcane Smash follows up fairly well, and your Vengeful Maelstrom means the team fight is instantly in your favor.

My second tank choice is Maokai and where he is still a very sturdy and almost unkillable tank (in a team fight) I am wondering now if he is as good as I think he is. If tanks are meant to initiate and CC very well, he's not all that great at it. He doesn't have a taunt and therefore can't force opponents to attack him. I'd like to keep playing as Maokai, but I'd like to know if he's at all useful.
