The ring is gone, it can't be the ring.
I think it's the cap.
The cap, as a guy, likes woman. The ring, as a girl, likes men. I don't know if it makes sense, but in Portuguese we don't use "he" and "she" for objects too, so it's easy for me to imagine the cap as male and the ring as female.
Don't know if it's the correct explanation, but still, we'll see in a sec.
