Ok, so I'm not sure if I qualify as a "new player" anymore, I have been around for about a month and a half now, but since everyone here was so helpful as i was starting out, I thought I would ask this here. After playing LoL more and more and experimenting with AD/AP, carry/support, lane/jungle, etc, I have kinda found that in solo queue the one thing missing from a LOT of teams is a tank that wants to PLAY as a tank. Alot of times I'll see a rammus or a cho build as DPS or AP. So I just saved up enough for a new champ, and I am looking for a tank to play as a pure tank. The only tank experience I have is with Shen when I was starting out. I guess the other options are Rammus and Amumu, and maybe some others? Could someone list some pros and cons of the gameplay of each, or just a recommendation on who you would play as a tank if you had your pick? I like the idea of Rammus and Shen for the taunt, and I did try Amumu once, but sucked as him, but I think I just wasn't used to his skills. Thanks! Any questions just ask and i'll reply quickly, if you're not sure what I'm asking about!

(oh, and if rammus, I am almost level 20 - do I need to jungle to really play effectively as rammus?)

You don't need to jungle to play any of these champs well. The best pure tanks are in order:

Shen > Rammus > Amumu > Jarvan,

then you get into less tanky people but still tanks, such as Cho, Singed, Udyr, Olaf, etc., that can be good AP/DPS tanky as well.

Practice makes perfect, the top rated guides on this site for those champs are pretty good, you should take a gander at those for builds and tips :)

Rammus is probably the easiest to learn out of the four. Jarvan is the strongest offensively. Another good tank to consider is Cho'Gath, although he takes a bit of practice.

Yea, and Cho is good AP tanky too.

Is cho really as much a "tank" as the others? The noob in me has always associated cho with champs like mundo....a TON of HP, but no real initiation moves to play the tank role. I am interested in him though

Cho'Gath reaches the highest health out of all the tanks and is extremely hard to take down when he builds 2 or 3 of his main items. In terms of tanks, he has some of the strongest CC in the game, including a stun/knockup and a 3 second silence, as well as a massive true damage nuke that hurts both tanks and carries alike. In the past, Cho'Gath wasn't popular due to his excellence in a solo lane and relative mediocrity in a duo lane, but people have realized his power a lot more recently, ESPECIALLY with the 1-1-1-jungle-roam metagame, where Cho'Gath can now have a solo lane without gimping his carries.

If your looking for a champion with a ton of hp, and a good initation I am gonna suggest Amumu. Capable jungler, tank, and a slight anti-tank due to his Despair.
