Sometimes it's better to have 2 skills at level 4 for more utility than having 3 skills at level 5 and one gimped skill. I usually have my final skillset at Q5 W4 E5 R4.

Thank you to jhoijhoi for the sig, and all the dividers in the guide.

Do note that Phoenix is substantially faster for jungling while Q is much stronger single-target DPS. A completely viable strategy is starting with the standard R-W-R-W-E build in jungle, then maxing Q after for the damage, leaving R at rank 2 until level 18.

i do start of with the standard R>W>R>W>E as it does give faster jungling, but wouldnt getting tiger at a low level burn through your manna faster trying to dance between the 4 stances?

You can go Tiger into Phoenix into Turtle, Clear blue with tiger, get wolves with phoenix, Wraiths with phoenix, turtle for lizard after duo golems. Should keep your jungle fast and get you double buffed immediately.

still slower than standard phoenix jungle, is very mana-heavy, and leaves you at lower health due to less uptime on turtle

And that is what blue golem is for. That is what health pots are for...I fail to see the problem here. You run low on mana TADA blue buff restores it. Your health getting low? Use a health pot. I don't get the craze with Phoenix stance start. The lack of ganking ability before level 5 is the weakness I see with it. Prioritizing your single target DPS to make you a more efficient killer against champions > than clearing the jungle 10 seconds earlier. Without tiger stance your damage output is considerably lower and you're suggesting maxing it "after you leave the jungle". We should be out of the jungle attempting a gank at level 4. Then again I run different runes than others I suppose. I'm just saying one of the roles of a jungler is to aid in relieving pressure in lanes for your teammates and increasing the pressure for your opponents. Sitting in the jungle until level 6 is a great way to aid your team in losing a game. Believe me this past week with WW free I've been reading a lot (i mean A LOT) "I won't gank until level 6" from every jungler I've come across ranked or normal. The few games I played as Udyr this weekend it seemed like I was in command of the map. Out and about first blooding at level 4 then back to the jungle, out and about again to cause more havoc. To each their own but I'm of the mind set that a jungler needs to have a presence in and out of the lane. Across the map etc etc. :P

It's a worse skill order if it only has cons..

I run low on mana with my normal Tiger route. You won't have enough mana do even do the route without slowing down significantly. Also, "optimal" routes can do the whole thing and double back if they want to, because of how much health they have, with Cloth armor; 2 Health potions and a ward.
This is assuming you have damage runes.

I have ArP reds/HP per level yellows/Flat mana blues/AS or ArP quints. I seem to be able to do just fine. That's great that the "optimal" routes can double back...The point Im getting at is sitting in the jungle creeping, is about as useful as AFKing in the well. What I'm also trying to get at is Udyr should be out ganking ASAP. Either way Udyr is one of my pick up and play champs, I feel more comfortable with him in the jungle then I do as WW or even Xin Zhao. But I won't presume to have all the facts I'm just explaining my play-style with Udyr. It works for me, it wins games which is enough for me to keep playing this way until I see a blatant problem.

Side Note: My "normal" Tiger Route is bluegolem/wolves/wraiths/duo golem/red...Going Tiger/Turtle/Tiger/Bear/Tiger...Though I did try this weekend Blue/wolves/wraiths/red...I'm not entirely sure if this was the route...I'll have to retry it and respond here but it seemed Tiger/Phoenix/Turtle/Tiger...No bear though I still succeeded in my gank, against a Vladamir no less XD. I'll get back to you guys on this when I can.

Udyr is so mana intensive in jungle that it's QUITE POSSIBLE to run out of mana, even with minimal stance use (if you're just trying to keep your passive going at 3 stacks). Without Turtle, it's difficult to stay at a comfortable mana level. Given his poor base mana, Golem doesn't give a crazy amount of mana regen anyway.

Blue buff doesn't give you an infinite mana pool on all junglers. Amumu also runs out of mana extremely quickly in the jungle if you're not careful.
