for a must-read book list I was expecting around 10 books.. not close to 100.
This will take a life time of reading. You should keep it to a real must-read book list, books that are life-changing or very very good, not books each person enjoyed >.<
Anyway, I suggest House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. I think it's more of a love story hidden within a horror novel, but it is categorized as horror I believe.
I choose this book because it's incredibly different. The way it is written and the careful layout of each page makes you incredibly anxious and enables you to actually "live" the book. It does not feel like you're reading a story, more like a journal of sorts, and the emotion is easily transmitted through the layout of each page and the way it is written. The way the plot makes the narrators interact with each other, the several references it makes in the foot notes making it seem authentic, the way it fits all the horror as part of an otherwise common every-day life and how it mentions the book itself inside the book is simply brilliant.
The Zombie Survival Guide is also a very fun and educational book which prepares you for a zombie outbreak. It is not like a crash-course, but more like a documentary, stating the several outbreaks through history and detailing various footage of zombie attacks. It also teaches you what you to do in each scenario. It describes the zombies' nature, how to deal with them, how to run away or ensure their destruction and how to leave in a world filled with zombies. It contains several footnotes, books and films references that make it feel authentic. Unlike normal scientific studies, however, all these references are fake.
I would not describe it as a "must-read" but I think it does fit this list nicely.
There are other books I suggest that have already been added, such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Now such fantasy worlds are very easy to imagine and are part of most games, but it's mostly thanks to J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis that imagined such vast worlds with intriguing creatures in the first place. For instance, the elves we currently imagine and play in video games were actually created by Tolkien. The other books by Tolkien are also a fine read, but they're not nearly as marking as the trilogy.
Allegory of the Cave and Animal Farm are few of the books on this list that I categorize as "must-read". They are incredibly educational and insightful, everyone should read them.

If you liked Allegory of the Cave you should read The Waste Land by T.S. Elliot (I've put a link in this post so you can check it out).
OOh and I added your books.
OOh and I added your books.
When I looked it up, google said it was Humor...Shall I move it to horror?
EDIT: It's in categories so people can pick the ones that they want to read based on what they like to read...I wasn't thinking it would get so many recommendations, so I called it a "must-read list".
