there are multiple ways to do it too, if you are unstable with the mouse and not very patient, if you want a little rougher of a render you can use quick mask mode. It's the little circle in the box at the bottom of your toolbar, click it and paint over all that you want selected, select inverse, delete, gg

I find it highly unlikely that there is NO lasso tool on GIMP...lasso is like the staple tool of all tools.
