one thing you'll learn is that gameplay in ranked and normal are very different. I tried playing Akali in ranked several times, but found that she isn't as viable in ranked as she is in normal. In normal games, she rolls heads and gets fed. But in ranked games, the only utility she provides is champ killing. But this isn't enough to win. She has ok farm, and mediocre tower pushing ability, so she's lackluster in the places that really matter. The thing is, you can get a bunch of kills with Akali, but she'll only get better at killing champions, which means kills are more and more likely to go to you than the rest of your team. This ends up with a game where the strongest champ can't push towers down and the rest of the team is somewhat lackluster. Getting kills can be great for suppressing the enemy team and such, but unless you're getting A LOT, the effect won't be enough to save the game for your team.

If you want to be good at ranked, you'll need to learn champions who have great all around utility for a team. For example, Ashe is a top ranked pick because she not only brings in great damage, but also has a built in stun, a 60 second ward, and a persistent slow. She's also great at farming and pushing towers. These are the kinds of qualities you need to look for when choosing a champ to play in ranked. Unfortunately, you can't always just pick a champ that you're having fun with, there needs to be a little more consideration than that.

Actually, Ashe is picked because she has an amazing late game, and hawkshot makes her a top pick.

Akali is AMAZING in Ranked, if you're not bad at her.

She is one of the most aggressive level 1-3 characters, and can really mess with a solo top sustain pick.

Akali is also a bit better at escape because of Shroud, and her build being a little bit more tanky with Lich Bane + Rylai's as core items.

Also, in Teamfights, Akali can DESTROY squishy carries, and then immediately move onto the next one and do the same thing again.

Akali is hard to play, but she is an awesome pick.

Ashe is actually a bit harder to play, but is much more late game focused, also arrow is a nice initiate.

It's not really a case of "oh akali isn't viable" it's more a case of... "akali is sort of hard to fit into team comps with the "Sustain Top, Mage Mid, AD+Support Bot, Jungler" formula because her jungle is bad, and she is melee, so it's hard to put her against an Annie mid, and not expect annie to walk all over her. (Properly played, Annie just combo's akali, but Akali WILL walk over a bad annie.)
Tri lane for life.

that's what I'm saying, Akali's way too situational to be a strong ranked pick. And the fact that you have to rely on the enemy being bad in some cases is not good. Sure you'll be able to win if the rest of your team has Strong CC and is good at pushing towers, but there are a lot of team comps that can keep Akali easliy suppressed.
I think the reason why Akali's great for pubstomping is because team comp is often terrible in normal games and so there's no real champion synergy to keep her suppressed

tl;dr-Akali's REALLY good at picking up kills, but not so good at anything else.

Actually, she's good at pub stomping because the main counter to her is Oracles.

In higher ELO games, Akali is used as an anti-carry, and anti-carries are usually hard to fit onto teams.

The current Meta is to have 3 solid lanes, and Tower pushing is VERY low value in terms of what makes a character good in solo queue/premade ranked.

Also, since most akali's get Rylai's->Lich Bane -> Deathcap, then they would be VERY good at taking down towers.
Tri lane for life.

I have to agree with Temzilla.
She is a really good pick and recently she's been used in high ELO ranked gameplay pretty well.
If you are playing her right you should be terrorizing the enemies in early/mid game due to her pure mobility and damage output.
But yeah I do agree the team composition should be in mind.

EDIT: @Temzilla I think Akali is harder to learn than Ashe to be honest and she can fit into the "sustain top" section as long as it isn't OP Udyr or anyone that can insta-vision her in stealth (ie. Lee Sin) which is mainly a jungler..

@TheBmB Actually Akali can farm REALLY well with her Q and with the use of her W she can free farmm with little harass, I almost always have a high cs when playing with her and if you are dominating lane if you kill the enemy in your lane 2/3 times you can push tower almost to low health or even take it. (depending on location of jungler and other enemies whereabouts) which you have to worry about with all champions.

@make264 I would say I'm fairly good at her, check out my guide if you'd like. there's some pointers in there and information. I'm planning to add more but I'm out of town atm...

you can check out my akali guide too, I use to play her exclusively, but I've taken a lot of time exploring other champs.

Also, just try not to use the ninjas for jungle. Shen used to be much more viable in jungle, but they nerfed his passive, so he's not so strong in the jungle anymore. There are better jungle choices who have stronger ganks/jungle control.
