Talk about playing to win

Tell me what you guys think! In the FPS forums I've lurked around there are rumors that this will end the era of FPS gaming due to such a high payout. I've heard that this will take many players away from LoL and HoN, etc. Basically that valve is trying to kill other games by putting money into this single game. Obviously any games dying from a competitive tournament is unlikely and most of the speculation is highly exaggerated, but it's fun to come up to think about what might happen. So what is going to happen?!

Dota will take players away from LoL regardless of the tourny or not.

But I don't think LoL will die by any means.

The thing about the $1,000,000 tournament is this...

If Valve doesn't support the game at the level of TF2, Riot, or S2 Games, then the game will die.

That's the thing though, valve doesn't care.

$1,000,000 is just them marketing their service by holding a tournament.

The revenue they get from digital sales is nigh on insanity.

One thing I've yet to see is a price. Will people pay $50 for the game? Yes. Will it affect LoL's player base? Yes, but not too much.

F2P (and in retrospect the Freemium model) is quickly becoming the way to go.

Doesn't care?

DotA 2 = Money

Valve loves money. If TF2 is ANY indication at all of Valve's commitment to keeping a game alive, DotA 2 will survive. With Icefrog on board I'd bet the competitive community thrives as opposed to TF2's, and TF2 is still kicking due to the amount of support the game gets.

Money =/= Fanbase.
The amount of money being injected won't change the following of thousands and thousands of people, the game itself would.

/sigh I was afraid some stupid thread like this would pop up.

please, can we put threads in their respective places?

this is not about lol, this is about dota2. therefore it belongs in off topic, not general discussion.

as i said before its just a publicity stunt to get people to play dota2.

Dota 2 is pretty much a 1:1 Dota clone with extra modes, doubt that those used to LoL gameplay will switch.
