How about screens of multiple games....I could sit and troll with ap tryn for 20 games and come out with a reasonable looking score. Frozen mallet isn't that great. Triforce is almost always...actually is always the better option.

My friend's Nocturne builds pure damage for 5 items, and 1 survival in the other slot. Usually that is enough. An example includes

If playing Noc, I'll take Mallet. After all, Guardian angel won't be useful in the context where your team gets deciminated/they wait for you to respawn, since you ARE one of the biggest damager after all. Banshee's Veil isn't always good, your spell shield should be enough. Lifesteal would be a piriority, able to heal back after getting nuked to near death, and Mallet can prevent the full nuke from r@ping you

First of all, Nocturne doesn't benefit as much from the CDR as other champions. He isn't much of a spam champion, since most of his damage comes from autoattacks which are extremely strong from steroids (3 steroids is ridiculous).
Black Cleaver already has 15 armor pen on first autoattack, and lets face it, the extra 25 damage outweighs the amount of damage the 15 armor pen will give you, especially later on, where flat ArPen becomes weaker.
And lastly, the active. Even with the active, the Ghostblade is only on-par or slightly lower than a 2 stack black cleaver. Sure, there's movespeed, but you already get movespeed from your Q. And what happens when the active runs out? You'll basically be attacking at the pace of a snail. This is especially important in drawn out lategame teamfights. Without the active, the amount of DPS that Ghostblade brings to the table is so pitifully low that a even a rushed Phantom Dancers has much more damage per second.

I just graphed total burst damage from Paranoia + Duskbringer (590 + 1.95 AD). It seems Ghostblade gives a tiny bit more damage at lower armor levels, while Black Cleaver gives more later on. However, the difference is so negligible that the armor pen from Ghostblade is simply just not an advantage at all, since Black Cleaver autoattacks are SO much stronger.

Ok, I love Nocturne and I play him as a crit AD Glass Cannon, and it has yet to fail me. The thing about Noc, is by design he is one of the best gankers in the game. He can easily pick off stragglers, support, or ranged carries.
If you want to make him an initiator, you have to find a way to make sure he isnt losing any of his power. He is extremely vulnerable to CC, and he can only block one attack with Shroud. Two if you get BV. If you cant find a balance you are gonna get wrecked, and hardcore.
Im sure that you can make an OT out of him, but its gonna take a lot of trial and error.
