You play karthus? You go in teamfights to deal most of the damage from defile? You DIE. That is it. You can play karthus a split pusher style and assist taking down 1/2 of all enemies HP not beeing even in the fight while you constantly push lanes and farm creeps. That way you wont die.
IN MY OPINION (and dont blame me for this) If you play a soulstealer Karthus = you fail. You will die and you shouldnt be afraid of it.

All I know from my games as Karthus is good positioning can totally r@pe the opponent team. Also, I've seen some good and bad Karthus players, and from my experience, rushing in is NOT viable unless your plan is to get your face smashed. Champions with Taunt/Fear/Stun would be useful for Karthus's team. Anything that can stop an attack for a while is already great by itself.
