Udyr's cool and all but... I'm not impressed.
People aren't countering him effectively.
I won't say he's not strong, he is. But I'm not convinced he's -as- strong as people are making him out to be. (Put me in against The Rain Man's Udyr and I'll probably change my story and come back and change my votes and start maining Udyr xP)
Buttt... This is really a hard thing to answer because the meta game and the effective champions are just shifting SO fast right now.
I could go with the standard picks and such Like Orianna and Annie and Amumu... But everyon'es already picked them.
Instead, I'm gonna roll with the counters to the current meta;
Zilean and Olaf.

No offence but, how does Zil counter the current meta? All he has is a slow and a GA built in. Hell, he's pro-meta because he makes it easier for your jungler to jungle and he makes a semi-decent AP carry in mid. Also, Olaf is a meta-golem, lol. He's built FM/Atmogs/Merc treads and then w/e. Sure he tkes a ton of damage while dishing it out and has a ton of sustain, his lane is not that great as his only ranged skill takes quite a bit of mana and is really quite easy to dodge as, if you're watching him, the wind up for it is quite long IMO.
On why Udyr is so powerful. If he had a more reliable gap closer, he would be OP. He's very strong in solo queue because of the great utility he has with a full team stun and because people don't ward so they don't know when he's coming.

Zilean and Olaf TOGETHER counter the current meta. Me and a buddy just constantly run trains on the meta game with that combo, me on Olaf and Him on Zil.
Your carry will die. And there's nothing you can do to stop it from happening. Sometimes I die (Even after Zil ult) sometimes I don't. But you're down a carry either way, and the way the meta is structured, fragile AD carries with massive damage are part of that meta.
That's counter meta. I kill that AD carry. She's out of the fight. Zil allows me to do that job even better, hence countering the meta even further.
In regards to Udyr. Yeah, that's why I'm not impressed by him. I always face palm when someone dies to Udyr in laning phase. With wards and map awareness that really shouldn't happen, whether he's solo top or jungling.
In team-fights, sure, he's better at landing kills and being more useful.
