Dorans Shield works on Karth because pretty much all he does pre 6 is farm with Q, and he gets mana back from his E. The HP and HP/5 combo is very sexy for him looking at how fast he can drop from a full combo.
I can also refer to Dyrus' Karthus Guide on Solomid.net, he is starting with Dorans Shield aswell.
But I cannot imagine it to be effective on other AP Carries.

Yet, they can be considered example of why building Doran's on an AP might not be the best idea. With AP's, you'll want to deal lots of damage around mid game. Rings contribute to that, while shields, of course, do not!

Aside from the obvious Kennen and such where mana's not an issue.

Long, long, long, long time ago it was almot a core on Vlad. Now, I'd consider it for Swain to make him more sustainable before 6, Karthus to make him less squishy and yeah, Kennen, cuz he is a rolling Pikachu he needs one to block Pokeballs.
I would say, for the most part, Doran's isn't a #1 pick for AP carries in lane. Here's why:
- AP carries usually face off against AP carries in lane, so the armor is only blocking minion hits.
- You'll get more regen/sustain out of boots/3 health potions.
Now doran's does have its advantages over boots/3, such as health and health regen that doesnt run out (like potions do), but I think the armor is minimally good, the health regen is quite good, and the health is replaceable (if you're only going for health, get Doran's Ring.)
So, when I think about it, it actually seems like a decent choice because it kind of gives the best of both worlds in defense (health from Doran's Ring, sustain from Boots/3 Health Potions).
