Viable, but you'd usually want him to be more of a supporter with Trinity Force.

Roaming meta is down the drain.
AP Ali was nerfed a lot (to be fair, it was kinda OP/not his role).
It's still possible to play him AP and/or roamer (he's a great roamer), but I agree with Searz on this one. Support Ali bot with a mid-game

If you're looking to experiment, I have both builds in a guide in my sig, though I don't take Mobility Boots on AP Ali. There's also a high-damage build near the beginning of my guide.
Otherwise find a different build you like and try it out for yourself. That's generally the best way to find good builds and strategies.

#1: Alistar isnt a real support, he's a tank (just like Taric, both aren't supports like Soraka or Sona).
#2: Roaming is kinda risky because if you don't kill, you'll be just losing xp.
#3: Age of Conan ads always show semi-nudes women, and that's a problem if children read things here.

#1: I think you're absolutely terribly mistaken about both Alistar and Taric. Especially Taric, he's pretty much nothing but a support, with a little survivability. Consider that Alistar supports his team in a different fashion as well. He's amazing in bot with a ranged DPS, no denying that. But you already know my opinion on this, other people can voice theirs on this topic.
#2: Agreed. Also you'll be a little gold-starved. No gold+no exp=weak champion.
