People think Mundo's a bit lackluster at the moment.
They plan on buffing his base attack speed next patch.
Ignite is on schedule to have it's Grievous Wounds effect removed, so that will be a major buff to Mundo. (Though they plan on buffing
Executioner's Calling, so Dr. Mundo's still got stuff to watch out for.)
Ignite is also not getting the change until most other self-heals get crippled and reworked into focusing on other utilities besides constant sustain.

neat. i might play mundo again, if only for the fact that every time i do the enemy team has 7 ignites.
and yeah lugi, my builds max ad is about 360-460 depending on how much health mundo has. meaning he'll crit for about 900-1150 damage, before armor reduction.

I used to run a similar build Caucheka but instead of infinity edge I get phantom dancer. Pretty good stuff I want to see mundo back in the competitive scene!

Never played Mundo, but looking at his stats and abilities...
He obviously relies on regen a lot. Ignite obvious hurts him bad, and you really would prefer heroes like Katarina and Tristana (who have healing debuff innately) are not on the enemy team. Spirit Visage is obviously a good item for him.
Gets an enormous amount of AD from an ability that will more or less have full uptime. Crits and attack speed are going to be very desired, moreso than just more AD. Armor penetration is also gonna be important.
Aside from that massive AD buff, he doesn't really scale much. Cleaver is based on the target's current HP and is magic damage, which means you won't have much magic penetration (likely just the 15% from offensive, if any.) The minimum damage on cleaver is fairly low. The AP coefficient on his AOE is abysmal.
So, judging from that, we probably want to play a bit like a right-click AD bruiser, and should build like one.
So, with that in mind, here's what I'd probably build Mundo as (I plan on playing him next time he's free but my IP is all sucked up with runes and other heroes for the foreseeable future):
Spirit Visage - Mundo uses tons of regen, SV increases regen and healing. No-brainer. CDR also brings the +100 AD skill closer to 100% uptime.
Frozen Mallet - Better than Warmog's, in my opinion. We don't get as much HP, but the autoslow will be important for chasing and gives us some utility to our team. With Atma's Impaler, it also provides more AD than Warmog's+Atma's will provide. The HP/5 from Warmog's isn't especially needed.
Berserker's Greaves - Mundo has lousy base attack speed but very high AD due to the +100 bonus. He gets CC reduction innately so Mercury's Treads are not critically important.
Atma's Impaler - This is another no-brainer. We're gonna have a lot of AP, and this gives us lots of AD for it. We also gain some armor, and plenty of crit.
Phantom Dancer - Movement speed, more crit, and a boatload of attack speed. With this and other items, we will hit very hard, very fast, and will be extremely difficult to escape from.
Last Whisper - Because people will be stacking armor when they see you coming.
Situational: Quicksilver Sash/Thornmail. Purchase as needed if you're having trouble with a given element. Both are cheap and provide good benefits for their cost, at least for a fighter (there are better options for tanks, but you aren't a tank.)
I would probably go for mostly crit damage runes and armor penetration runes. If you stack crit damage, IE will end up being unnecessary.
In terms of item order, I imagine I would prioritize it like:
- Spirit Visage (rush it)
- Boots
- Phage
- Zeal
- Finish Frozen Mallet
- Finish Phantom Dancer
- Atma's Impaler
- Last Whisper
You'd add in a Negatron Cloak (for QSS) or Chain Vest (for Thornmail) as needed and complete those items when needed.
EDIT:
Just playing around with a builder. I went with nothing but crit damage runes (trololol) and went 12/0/18 on masteries. Armor penetration and the magic pen perks, CD perks, and then perks for your summoners (probably flash/exhaust or ghost/exhaust... I'd go with Flash.)
Building your core (spirit visage, zeal, phage, atma's, and boots) would cost about 7400g, easily done even in a lousy game and would give you respectable stats. Completing your build (completing with Last Whisper but you could use whatever) would cost a little over 13,000, and would give you stats something like:
3k HP, ~150 armor, ~80 MR, 451 move speed
330 AD, ~1.3 atk speed, 50% crit @ 245% dmg, 40% armor pen with 6 flat armor pen, 15% magic pen
Seems pretty reasonable to me. Hard to bring down, very fast, solid damage output potential, and you permaslow anything you hit.
I'm actually wondering about swapping out Last Whisper for a Gunblade. It's more expensive, but you get vamp for cleaver/agony, some extra AD (loss of the armor pen would mean you do significantly less damage however), and some lifesteal for extra sustain, and the activated ability would certainly make chasing even easier. Trinity Force instead of Phantom Dancer could also be an interesting option.

As a player who used to main Mundo, I will tell you one of the reasons I stopped playing him is because nothing seems to synergize too terribly well for him in 5v5 games.
Sunfire cloak / FoN rush is really strong mid game for Mundo in 5v5 if you max your burning agony and stay in the middle of a fight for 5-10 seconds (Easily feasible with Mundo).
In 3v3 a Build I had begun to gravitate towards was 2-3 Doran's shields, Giant's belt, Negatron Cloak, and Atma's, later finishing Warmogg's. I used that build to a good effect on a few occasions.
Eventually a PD with Atma's is nice.
Core items for me never included Spirit Visage. It's fine to build but I feel rushing warmogg's is just as good and spirit delays offensive items.
Mundo's cleaver doesn't do quite enough damage to make him not ignorable without building some damage, and Atma's allows that.

AP Mundo? LuLWhut? He has one skill that scales with it, at a 0.2 ratio.
MPen Mundo is better imo, make sure dem cleavers always take a quarter of their health off huehuehue
Shred mundo works well, but is really expensive and kinda flimsy - Black Cleaver, Madreds Bloodrazor, Malady and Wit's End are all awesome on him, give him Merc Treads/Boots of 3 and a Warmoggs and you're pretty much set to go...
Crit Mundo is flimsy but lulzy, especially once you get IE and maxed out E
Wacky hybrid build of Boots, Gunblade, Atma's, Warmoggs, PD might work well.
Aaaaaaand the good old favourite of Boots, Atma's, and 4 Warmoggs is always good for a laugh

Why not just get SV instead?
