Are you playing aggressive early?
When I first picked up Caitlyn I too found her to just be awkward, and I couldn't get a hang on her either. Then I realized she needs to be aggressive pretty much the entire laning phase for her potential to be utilized. It obviously depends on your opponents as well but generally speaking Cait is an early game bully and should be used as such.

She's easy. Probably the easiest ranged carry.

Caitlynn is preeeeetty easy...
1) Scout w/ traps
2) Right click enemy champ
3) Press R
4) ???
5) Profit
Considering how outstanding her early game damage and range is, harassment should be safe and easy. She has a very responsive attack animation, so farm farm farm farm farm.
Aggression is pretty key to snowballing your early game.

I guess the only trick could be traps.
Just use them for both defense and zone control.
You can cut off key points in lane and gain control of bushes, making it very difficult for your opponents.

Caitlyn is a sniper. She's all about positioning more so then everyone else.
