It's way different.
AP Kogmaw is an anti carry, blowing up squishies from far away.
AD Kogmaw is a fragile and somewhat immobile super carry.

I build AP Kog'Maw like this:
Doran's Ring >
Malady >
Madred's Bloodrazor >
Rabadon's Deathcap > Rylai's Crystal Sceptre > Usually
Void Staff.

AP Kog'maw is awesome in Dominion. http://alyzar.com/?p=52

imo ap kog is an inferior xerath :)
if u get kogmaw i feel its a waste to not build him dps (if onhit or standard ad doesnt matter that much xD either one is friggin awesome)

Difference, in my opinion, is that AD Kog is meant to destroy tanks and other heavily defensive enemies. AP Kog can drop the faster/ranged champions with little effort. Just taking into account that amazing range.
Yeah, Xerath often wishes he was Kog.
For other unorthodox AP builds, I would recommend trying Warwick and Tryndamere. More hybrid though. Both are excellent at throwing down AD damage and keeping themselves alive. But AP gives them even more survivability, especially on WW with Q. Trynd's healing is increased slightly by AP and his spin does more damage (you can roll IE and PD then get some AP, maybe Hextech). Same thing with Yi. His heal is not recommended in combat by any means, but it does increase his defenses exponentially. His Alpha does a lot of damage too. Keep in mind, I say try all of these Hybrid.

Mmhmm. AP Kog is > Xerath.

AP Kog is a niche-y champion. His poke is large but you have to have the mana to sustain it. He takes out tanks with pretty decent speed thanks to the HP% shred and the AA range increaser on his E.
Xerath is just new. He's really long range but, unless you can land skillshots 90% of the time, his damage output drops like a rock as the highest ratio is in the combination of his 3 ult shots.
All his skills deal over 250 damage without any AP.
TL;DR: They both have their spots. Kog is more versatile. Xerath has better CC.

Just soliciting opinions on AP Kog'Maw. Is it way inferior to AD Kog? I played one game with it, and actually had a lot of fun. I'm trying to experiment with some unorthodox or lesser played builds that might be able to carry me out of ELO hell. I was against Malz mid and was really satisfied with how wwell I was able to poke at him. Even ended up outfarming malz, which is an accomplishment for me.
So how do you guys play AP Kog? Any gameplay tips? And a build would be good. I just went Doran's, tear, sorc shoes, catalyst > RoA, rabadons.
The best thing about AP Kog is just that feeling of satisfaction when getting a kill with a snipe. Any other characters that can be build AP that typically arent? (saw a thread that mentioned AP Pantheon...sounded kinda crazy)
