Amumu's not OP. he is insanely strong however. Best initiation in solo queue that pretty much screams "LET'S DO THIS ****! LEEEEEEROYYYYYY, UH JENKINSSSSSSS!"
That amount of initiation, coupled with the chaos that his ult causes, makes him very scary in an unorganized teamfight. Also, he's a very easy jungler for new level 30s so, if your team has no jungler, your team could get underleveled and end up feeding because they don't ward.

I guess you're right, but I still believe he isn't worth a ban. There are scarier champions out-there (i.e. Gangplank/Lee Sin). Thanks for the info :)

Lol ^ true. Reminds me of when I went into the enemies base for the hell of it with all 5 turrets up running around saying LERRROOOOOYYYYYYYY JENKINSSSSSSSSSS with the whole enemy team chasing me and yet I made it out alive 4\5 times hahaha.

When you're in a higher level ranked queue, you're looking at a generic build of:
Support
AP Carry
AD Carry
Tank/Initiator
Floater; usually a Tanky DPS/Off-Tank
Without question, your AP Carry and AD Carry need to have as much farm as they can. If you're running a Tanky-DPS solo top (J4, Irelia, etc) then they probably need to farm to afford a more expensive Atmogs build.
Jungler has gimped farm. When you're jungling, you're accepting that you're going to have poor farm compared to having solo farm in a lane. So, we're probably not going to be seeing an AD or AP Carry jungling often. Supports that are jungling are, well, not supporting the lane during the time they're jungling in the same fashion that they would if they were in lane. What's that leave us with? Tanks, mainly (but some cheaply-built Tanky DPSes find themselves in there, too, like Cho-Gath).
When you're having a jungle, you're probably wanting someone with good ganks. Oftentimes, good ganks come with being a good initiator (there are some exceptions to this, like Jungle Riven's ganks are boss). So, a good jungler usually is running some sort of slow or stun that lets them gank.
Amumu's one of the characters that fits well in all of these categories.
Amumu doesn't really need farm. Aegis, boots, and away he can tank. His skill shot leaves him at point blank while stunning, which is incredible for a gank. His ulti is an instant, AOE stun that lets him initiate teamfights or gank. Amumu's main issue is that he can't reliably donate blue buff to solo top or mid because he needs to it jungle.
tl;dr: Amumu fits a pretty nice niche is ELO Hell.

From what I've seen people are still banning lee sin often even at 1400+. However I still manage to slip in a few games with him from time to time.

Agreed. At lower ELO, you're probably better off banning Yi and Tryn over Lee Sin.
