Putting it in your sig is fine, and putting in your guide "If you like my guide don't forget to +Rep" is cool too. Similar rules to guide and blog advertising.
Posting somewhere just to say "Give me a +Rep", constantly replying after helping people to remind them to +Rep you, offering to vote people up in exchange for rep, threatening to vote down if they don't +Rep, just generally being a tool, is not cool. For the most part common sense should be enough :)
