About the 3rd gen being the best, I would have to make that come down to whether physical and special moves came out then, or if that was in 4th gen. I started playing slightly competitively in 4th gen, which made me have a good amount of joy. 5th gen was kinda meh, though. Just an expansion to 4th gen, not too many new things.
As mentioned the Choice items were already introduced in 3rd gen, along with Focus Sash (As far as I remember), which are items that made battles that much more interesting. Oh! Let's not forget the hazards like Stealth Rock and Spikes. Those can really come in handy against certain opponents. Not to mention the cure; Rapid Spin <3
Oh well, enough about that. I generally would have enjoyed 1st and 2nd gen (if not 3rd as well) if there were physical and special moves, instead of different types being a certain kind of damage. This fact made fx Arcanine completely useless in the first gens, as Fire was special, and Arcanine obv. has high Attack-ratio and only a decent Sp.Atk. ratio :/

That's how I remember it as well, but i think to believe that it isn't the case for FR/LG, which is weird, since they were made after 3rd gen. Not certain of this either though. I just remember getting disappointed from this not so long ago. May be wrong.

Searz, I think we're talking of two different things ;o
I'm talking about each individual attack having either physcial damage or special damage. Fx Flare Blitz, which is Fire-Type but still Physical.
