Been seeing an increase in jarvan players, at least in my games, after his free week. Looking to pick up a "bruiser" type champ that can both jungle or top lane, and has some good utility for the team.

Which of these two do you recommend, and why? What different roles do they serve?

There are alot other bruisers than can jungle or top lane. Gangplank, Udyr, Lee Sin, Olaf, Riven, Shen, Shyvana, Volibear and Skarner. So you have many choices. If you want team utility you could pick Gangplank for his ultimate over-map support or Shen, level 6 team-saving teleport over map.

But between these two I would say Trundle.

They're both great champions for both roles.

I would say that J4 is a better ganker. He has a gap closer, knockup and his ultimate is a jump/terrain block in a ring. Takes a Flash or dash ability to escape and does quite a bit of damage.

Trundle is a lot safer and has an easier time tanking. His ganks are a little less terrifying since he only has one soft CC, but his pillar is an excellent tool for team fighting and zone control. Trundle's ult allows him to debilitate an enemy offtank quite handily and has a monstrous amount of tenacity and sustain. His main CC is cast at range, while J4 has to jump straight in.

Jarvan - Utility ganker, initiator, bit more aggressive.
Trundle - Team fight utility, tankier, higher sustain.

As far as I know, their jungle's are fairly similar, though trundle has a little less sustain. Jarvan has a more aggressive top lane while Trundle's goal is to out-sustain and eventually zone the enemy.

But like I said, they're both fantastic champions. Pick whichever you prefer. Their CCs and kits are quite unique, so I'd recommend trying them out before you buy them if possible. It's a good idea to know if you can use their kit effectively or not before you spend your IP/RP on a champion.
Thanks to Nyoike for the sig!

Buy Trundle. 100% guaranteed he will never get banned unless people start to learn who you are and you get to like, 1900 ELO.

Well apples are cool but Oranges are also really good.

(Trundle is best jungle or solo top)

(Jarvan is best jungle or as a support bot lane in a kill lane)
