I hope this is in the right forum, but I was just thinking about all the ranged supports out there and I was wondering how they differ from each other and what they excel in.

The ones I heard are this:

Sona: Sustainable heal, early-game harass. Plays aggressively. All-around support.
Janna: Crowd-control queen, can disengage fights and interrupt like crazy. The team fight support monster.
Lulu: Versatile, weak pusher, great team fighter. Not really sure what she excels in. She's pretty good at adapting to anything.
Nidalee: Bruiser, crazy spear damage, great zoning....not too sure about her since I haven't played her
Soraka: Great heals, silencing queen,....not sure either, because I haven't played her.

Your thoughts on these supports and where they excel at?
Feel free to list the many many supports I missed---I simply haven't played them or against them yet.
^_^

Thanks for your thoughts in advance!

There's 3 types of supports in my eyes.

Kill supports - Blitz, Alistar, Nautilus, Leona
Sustain supports - Alistar, Soraka, Sona
Aggressive supports - Janna, Sona, Nunu, others

They excel at their category. :P

There's also a bit of grey area between these categories where people like Taric and Lulu fit.

I'm not a support expert but, that's what I got. :P

Taric is most definitely a kill support. He can heal a little bit but you pick him for his long range stun, crazy burst and armour aura.

Hence why I said there's a grey area.
He has a heal that applies to both people and a decent defensive bonus.
This defensive bonus also translates to a real offensive bonus with the armor shred and a real good stun.

Thank you to jhoijhoi for the sig, and all the dividers in the guide.

I see. Thanks for your comments!

This is also going to help me find out what kind of support I will play, so thanks again.
Overall, I think there is not really a niche that you can cram a support in, but there are very distinctive styles so what you said I totally agree with. :D I hope that last sentence made sense. :-P

I've got to say, Nunu and Alistar are very fun supports to play imo ^^ You can really terrify the enemy AD Carry with how you control the bushes, Whether that be a sneaky iceball from the shadows, or a headbutt/pulverize combo :D

Nidalee also has her own wards and her heal has the attack speed buff for AD Carries.

My favourites (in order) include these champions for these reasons:
Taric - Great buff/debuff that always helps the team and AD Carries. Great sustain with the heal, never has to heal himself. Amazing single-target interrupt for shutting down a specific enemy, or for ganks. Great team damage buff for everybody (AD and AP).
Janna - Great shield, providing wins to all trades in two ways, protects AD Carry from damage while buffing the Carry's attack damage. Also provides two different AoE CCs, making her great for destroying enemy positioning, one that is a huge AoE heal.
Lulu - She basically has a silence and a slow in two different abilities, both that deal damage. She also has a separate buff for AP and AD champions, one which is a shield, protecting from damage. Her ult provides amazing team fight CC and survivability for one champion.

I love playing many others. Technically anybody that has CC, buff, or ally sustain can be a support. It just depends on what you need against that enemy match up or what works best for your AD Carry. I always prefer something that can help with the team through all parts of the game as well as having a successful early game.

(And everyone should try their favourite supports as Mid AP Carries. So fun!)
Personal habitual activites? Utilizing gargantuan idioms to fabricate intelligence.
