How do you feel about the profanity filter?

As many of you know, we had to add a profanity filter for various reasons. In order to minimize the impact this would have on our members, we took a number of measures to apply the profanity filter only to content that is being viewed by guests. However, doing this has added complexity to the system which in turn leads to more caching glitches, extra work maintaining the system and slower page loads, because we are trying to maintain two versions of the site - with and without the profanity filter.

So my question to you guys is, should we even be doing this? How much would you care if the profanity filter was applied globally (for guests and for members)? If we could speed up the site and free up time to build more new features by making it global, would it be worth it to you?

To get an idea of what this would mean, just log out and browse the site as a guest. That same filter would be applied for members. Note that we will always fix any incorrectly filtered words and we do not need to apply the filter to PMs.

Toss your vote in and I invite you to post any thoughts or concerns in this thread :)

I voted Maybe because Yes means I don't like profanity, and in fact, I don't mind it as long as it's used in the right context. Some swear words are more acceptable than others, but there are some people who don't seem to know that ^^

I don't believe it's necessary to maintain two sites to keep our "intellectual property" the way it is. Anyway, sometimes it's more amusing to read **** as opposed to the actual word. FYI I have the language filter on always when I play LoL, because I don't trust the people there. At MobaFire I'm not afraid of being sworn at or being exposed to particularly horrendous profanity.

I don't mind the filters, but it's getting annoying when it censors out words than aren't supposed to be censored :/

And sometimes it makes things difficult to read, while other times it makes it better.

Not gonna lie, I personally hate profanity filters :) It's the first thing I turn off in any online game. However the reality is, we have to have it on for guests, and that leads to complexity if we try to leave it off for members.

In the end, it doesn't kick in all that often anyways. Cursing is more of a now and then thing, even on here. You won't be seeing **** on every post, and if people complain that certain words don't need to be filtered we should be ok to dial it back a bit. It's also often done in really unnecessary ways, and sometimes it gets ridiculous to the point where it would be better to tone things down. Especially in the titles of guides and threads.

Over all I'm torn on this, hence the poll. I'm leaning towards making it global, at least for the next while, as I can directly see the benefits. I'm just worried about how it will affect our members.

@tehAsian, don't worry about that. We will fix those instances. If you spot a word being censored that shouldn't be, it's a bug and if you report it to me I will fix it. It's impossible to make a perfect filter right out the door, the best we can do is tweak and adjust it over time to get it hitting only the things we need it to.

Regarding difficulty to read, if you have some examples we can take a look and try to adjust things to make it better. For example some of the words in the profanity dictionary are rather long and we might only need to really block out one part of the word and not the entire word. That might assist with reading.

We could also consider partial blocks, especially for tamer words. f*** instead of ****. Would that help?

I guess I see where you're coming from, if someone's swearing at people in the first place then it's general consensus that they should be banned/punished for it. Really good point, however.

Poll ebbs towards you wanting a profanity filter, Matt, you can see by the wording (and the fact you're seriously considering it to the point you made a poll about it). If you want it, do it! It's your site, it really doesn't properly affect anybody on here, nobody, will like the site any more or less with or without a profanity filter.

I'm indifferent about swearing, I'd never swear myself (and many people I play with can testament to this) but I don't care if people swear. I'd prefer it if they didn't swear, of course, but I won't think less of them (unless it's far too often, of course). Words are words, whithersoever you are, there will remain words used to treat others badly (and the only reason we do think they are bad is because the consensus is that they're bad, it's funny, really), and people will just resort to different words (generally considered less 'bad', but aggressive all the same) - but some really do detest them, though for the fact you want the filter in, Matt, I voted yes.

Sorry I didn't mean to word the poll one way or another :) I cheated and edited the options to remove any slant in the choices.

That's kind of my stance on this. Swearing out in the open on the other hand is completely different.

"I f***in hate soloqueue!" is completely different than "I f***in hate XXX member!" and the latter should probably be warned or something.

I know I swear when I type, probably should get off that habit, and it really doesn't bother me. That's not to say there can't be benefits if it's done right.

I know you didn't mean to, but your desires bled through (as they do for everybody), in a Freudian sort of way - which proved to me your desires that I half-guessed from the existence of this thread.

It's like that thing where you flip a coin to decide between two things. Not because you want the result, but because there's a split second when it's in the air where you secretly wish it's one of the two, your desire for justification is just satisfaction to the Id, to anybody who subscribes to Freudian psychology.

I am 100% for a profanity filter if it will allow Matt to work more freely.

I don't really care either way honestly.
