Removal of Chapter Titles

Would you like to, as an author, be able to toggle your chapter headers on and off?

Hey guys,

When the new format came out I had mentioned that it would be really cool if the author's of guides could toggle whether or not we wanted the individual chapter titles to show up at the beginning of each section.

A lot of guides are currently using their own headers that they have created for each section and the result is a double header and a lessening of overall aesthetic appeal for the guide.

Now a way around this is of course to create a single chapter guide, but I really like the functionality of the Table of Contents that you have already included. If we were able to have multiple chapters, toggle off the headers, but keep the table of contents I think it would be a vast improvement to the setup. This could simply be a check mark box on the floating save/publish box for easy removal or replacement. Currently I believe the headers and table of contents are linked which is why it isn't an available option. If you have no TOC, you have no headers and vice versa. That is of course speculation because when you did the new format release there was a time where the TOC and headers all disappeared, then they all came back simultaneously.

If it is possible to separate these features I believe that many of the authors would use this option in order to better personalize their guides and give them a fluid transition from one chapter to the next. Or, if they would like, they could use the headers that you guys are already providing :)

Just an idea that I wanted to bring back up for you guys in case you had forgotten. Thanks again for all of the work you guys do. The amount of traffic you guys deal with is amazing.

I love it, someone asks about Rep, which is covered in several threads and it gets 81 views and 11 comments. I bring up something new and no one looks at it. Wtf guys?

please note that you said this only three hours afterwards and, probably because you said it, no-one is going to reply. patience, cubby, will get you a lot farther then complaining. Your idea is sensible and useful, I'm assuming that Matt will reply to you when he sees this/he already has but hasn't commented yet (maybe he would do some research before replying etc.).

Next time cubby, just wait. It can be annoying to see stupid threads getting more views and posts then useful ones, but that's the internet. You just have to bear with it, and hope that you will get answered. If you don't, a simple PM to Matt would solve that (but wait at least a week before you do, Matt is busy).

I like this idea. I have no idea how difficult it would be to implement, but I can't think of a reason not to do it if it isn't too much trouble for Matt.

Do note that it is possible to create your own custom table of contents using anchors throughout your guide. You can look at GrandmasterD's Xerath guide for an example and jhoijhoi's Making a Guide for information on how to do it.

That was actually 15 hours, not 3. Hence my frustration. I didn't mean I wanted Matt to comment specifically, but I would like some sort of input from the community as well so that the admins can see that this is something that is either important or not. If it is just me, then by all means scrap the idea, but the thread about +rep just kind of irked me when I saw that there still hadn't been a single response.

It isn't that I'm impatient, it is that this is something that requires opinions, not facts that can be found by using the handy dandy search function.

@PSI: I have seen the custom TOC before, but I would think that would actually be harder on the servers than using the one that has already been implemented. Plus it is a much simpler solution and doesn't require as much BB code knowledge for those that are coming and are new to making guides.

Thanks for your input guys.

I see my mistake, I apologize for that. There is nothing to add on want you want though, it is a simple idea and requires no more detail. Matt always comments on ideas and such when he can and, even though you have received no reply yet, he ghosts the support forum constantly. It is only at certain times that he is actually able to reply to what you have said so even if you consider no-one has seen your idea, you should know that Matt has (as he always does). He's good like that, I'm sure he'll get to implementing it as soon as he can.

Yeah Matt's great. When the site overhaul happened he was really good about taking everything everyone was saying and implementing it as best as he could. My frustration was in no way geared towards the admins, that is counter productive :)

haha I never said it was, but I agree. Though I sometimes feel like I'm belittling the other admins by thinking that, since they would be doing as much work as he is; just "behind the scenes".

That wasn't really my point. Matt and the rest of the staff have a list of projects a mile long and each one of them takes time. In theory there's nothing wrong with the idea, but it may not be high on Matt's list of priorities.

I'm not talking about difficulties caused by the new system. I'm talking about how much time and effort it would take to set up in the first place. The opportunity to code your own TOC is already there, while your suggestion would require Matt to spend time (Idk how much) setting it up.

Like I said, I like the idea. I just don't know if it will happen or not, since there is already a workaround for anyone who really doesn't like headers.
