He's a billion times stronger as a jungler. I wouldn't expect him to win very many top matchups naturally. I don't recommend playing him in lane.
If you're not playing at a hardcore level, you can do it anyway for fun. As long as you're a better player than your opponent you can still win.

His Q and Passive give him a escape mech and a way to sustain himself. He has that fear to pretty much auto-win trades. I dunno. Early levels he seems so weak tho. (Unless you run a full ad rune page. Combined with your Q, his early fighting would be stronk.
He's a lot like Renekton as a solo top, in the sense that he will automatically push the lane, but minus the gap closers and plus ranged harass and a shield.

Nocturne top would probably be a passive lane. Saving your Duskbringer and Shroud of Darkness for escape tools if you get ganked, and strong kill potential when your jungler ganks your lane. But I don't think Nocturne will stomp his lane alone.
