Smarcasting is one click instead of two. Your spell activate automatically when you click on it. Its casted were your cursor is. Its extremely helpful on fast casters such as 
Ryze and Cassiopeia as you can spam your spells way easier. But of course it takes some practice to get used to it and there are some spells you might dont want to smarcast at all.
You can also smartcast your special abilities items such as Zhonya's Hourglass.

I used to hate the idea smartcast for unspoken reasons, but it's definitely worth a try. I still very much prefer without for now.

Do pro AP players use smartcast? At times I ponder putting it one to compensate some frustrating moments, but I also wonder if I won't end up using spells on minions half the time. I also see a lot top player videos locking their champs, it messes me up keeping that locked sight thingy :s
