Mana regen item late game is a waste on everyone, if you are manaless it's even worse.
I agree with that.
The upgrade for the Kindlegem are very limited. If my memory is correct, it enter in the reciepe of only 3 items. If I upgrade it into Soul Shroud, its for the HP and Cdr. The Sherulya would be more for the speed boost it provide for the whole team.
Again, here, you can name countless of better items. That is not the point. It flow more with the build and its early progression. If i have unlimited cash at the end, I will sell this Kindlegem for one über item.
However, given my build logic, the Soul Shroud is not a so bad option, I believe. It is one of the item that give most HP and it have cdr. It will reinforce the HP boost I got with Rylai's Scepter. If I didnt got any important HP boost previously, buying ONLY the Soul Shroud would definitly sux, but here it is not the case.
For the esthetic of the build... mmmh, I know it is note the most eyes candy, but mine is mostly text. I hardly see how I can improved that. Text will remain text. Should I put less icons into it? It seem a standard procedure from the other builds I saw.
I also want to avoid to give a whole League of Legends lesson with my builds. I try to focus and explain only the idea I want to develop or reach with the items selection I proposed.

Which build did you used for that? If you used the traditional build we can see now with Hextech revolver and Deathfire Grasp, yes it doesn't work super well. With the new Kat, if you want to use Shunpo as main skill, try my build or another one that will focus on giving a important AP boost early. That way, it become more interesting. If you follow that path, some builds might give you only AP, while mine try to take your low HP in consideration.
For me, I found Katarina super fun to play with Shunpo on low Cooldown when you have that skill at lvl 4-5. You can do so much thing with that skill and you can adopt a much more agressive style of playing rather than only harassing.
As for Soul Shroud, I explain the logic behind it in the build. I fall down on this item not because it is the best item, but because it follow the build logic well. I have already the Kindlegem, I could sell it later on, but at this stage I prefer to upgrade it. As a 6th item and with the amount of AP my Kat already have, I don't think the Lichbane would make all the difference. It is also MUCH more expensive. If you just drop item for the sake of it, you could mention the Rod of Ages on that matter, but it would make not sens.
Like it is, with the Soul Shroud, my Kat do have near 3000 HP and +425 AP. No so fragile anymore. As you stay longer alive, that mean you increase your chance to take multiple advantage of Voracity, which will boost your overall damage output more than everything. Alive, also, you are much more useful for you team. For me, there is no point to jump in fight to inflict one huge damage and die soon after.
However, maybe i could add a note in effect that if you do need some specific item late game, you could easly sell the Kindlegem. However, I don't feel the need to do so, because it is rather obvious and my main goal is to explain the logic behind the main build as it is.
Why not? Unorthodox things might work : ) It's not like if the current build was lacking into AP or was proposing to purchase that item first :P It comes very late and complete the items build order well.
Of course if at the end you have unlimited gold, you could sell the [Kindlegem]] and buy the Abyssal Scepter, the Lichbane, the Guardian Angel or why not the Warmog. However, it doesn't follow the build logic very well.
When it comes to your guide, I read all of it and you have some nice things said in there but there is a problem : THE AESTHETICS!!!
You should learn some aesthethics.
However I UPVOTE because of the work you put into your guide.
