Yes, knowing one champion exceptionally well IS beneficial never said it wasn't. However I am stating that having a wide variety of champions to play IN CASE you don't get your one role/champ means you have a back up plan. If all I ever did was play Irelia top and never bothered with anyone else I may very well win every game. But how about the games where I don;t get to go top? Or Irelia is banned out. Now I'm sitting here with no other champions to play or any other role known.

IMO knowing a few champions while specializing in one is your safest bet. Assuming you always get to play the role you want with the champion you want, I guess it wouldn't matter. But that isn't always the case.

Tosh,

have you ever thought that maybe YOU aren't the one reading properly (it happened a lot before).

@Jeff's comment too,

He is choosing versatile champs that can fill every role. If he gets mid or doesn't and has to support, he can still Zyra.

And I never said he should ONLY play those 2 champs -- he should hone on his skills with them but still be familiar with at least 1 or 2 others in each role in case his picks are banned or he gets countered.

Thanks to TRUeLM, Plastictree, Scrax, Xiaowiriamu, foggy12, JahGFX, jhoijhoi, msrobinson, JEFFY40HANDS, Nyoike, MissMaw, and me :) for the sigs!

What Scarra said in there, so true.

Was the same for me, I played since S1 Kennen Release, had 1,4k Normal Wins in S2. But my Elo was still 1,2k-1,3k.
Then I starterd to get interested in Pro-Leageplays, I started to learn and improve. And I got it. Right now I am at 1700 Elo, just because I improved, not because of luck to have the right teammates.

I also proved it with my little project that I started after I realized that 1,5k Elo is something I can easily achieve.

Being able to play two champions really well will give you an edge when playing the champions. Picking two that are really diverse will also work in your favor. Especially with Zyra's team fight presence, you should be able to carry games if played correct, and if your team knows to follow up. (Unfortunately for you, most players doesn't know to follow up Stranglethorns..)

Anyways..If you are capable of playing those two champions well, you should be fine, considering how they can fill multiple roles, and are rarely banned. However, I strongly recommend you to learn at least 2 champions for at least 3 roles, preferrably all 5 roles.

I used to be like this as well. Like, I'd only ever play Lux. Rarely banned, difficult to counter, and can fill a support role as well. However, that won't always get you everywhere. Sometimes, I'd have my support pick before me, and then I'll have to go against a Talon mid or something.

I suggest you consider the champions that are strong against your champion, and work from there. In a sense, it's kind of like Rock Paper Scissors.
If you have any further questions regarding my comments, feel free to PM me, and I will answer them to the best of my abilities.

If I have helped out, a +rep would be appreciated!

Try to have runes/masteries set up for at least 2 roles like you mentioned, but be prepared to perhaps take other roles. Jungling is a good way to escape elo hell, since you influence the lanes and your team more than any other single person. (Opposed to support who only really affects their partner early game).
