I've been looking at the prices of runes and wanted to see if someone could give me a good idea of how much IP I should need for them. I have been trying to focus on playing top, but I don't only play top. So, obviously, I need to buy enough to be able to do some mixing and matching at some point, but I'm going to focus on trying to build tanks first.

So, how much should I save up for one full set of runes for my tanky champs(Shen, Singed, etc)?

Edit: I have just over 10,000 IP right now. Spent some around lvl 12 for Nidalee. I also looked over the guide listed in the New Player FAQ, but wasn't sure if it was completely up to date.

I'd say around 12k for 1 page, for every next page you can re-use the same runes but add some different ones so it gets cheaper :)

So are you lvl30 or still lvling?

If you're lvling you can get some Tier1s for the stats you really need like AttDmg for last hitting.

Post lvl20 you can start getting Tier3s.

Regardless of what you play your first set should probably be AD Marks, Armor Seals, MR/lvl Glyphs, and prob AD Quints.

After that MaginPen Marks and AP Quints.

From there pick up anything specifically for most played champions based on the guide of your choice.

You'll also need a set for Support before you start ranked.

I'm currently lvl 19 and I am saving for the Tier 3s.

I was wondering if I should buy specifically for my tanky champs or if I should do like you said and just go ahead and buy standardish runes and then fill in from there.

Yes. Id go for the standard set first. It's pretty much spot-on for the majority of top laners anyway.

As for budgeting, which was the original question...

If you aren't spending IP on champs you'll have enough to bye runes for nearly all champs in all roles of the game by lvl30 in my experience. Aside from a few real outlier champs, and maybe a few support specific setups you'll have them all.

If RP is an option, by champs on sale with RP, and Runes with IP as you lvl. Once you have your basic runes, start only buying champs with IP, and only spend RP on skins and stuff.

If you're aiming to play tanky champs, you want to get Greater Seal of Armorx9 at 205IP each(1845IP) and Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resistx9 at 205IP(1845IP). Those are really the essential for "tanky champions" and really any other current champion atm.

Now the marks and quintessences vary a bit depending on which champions you like. Ideally, it's the best if you can somehow grind the IP to get all the runes but I'll list what is preferred. In order of importance from what I believe.

AD tanky jungle

Reds: Greater Mark of Attack Damagex9 205IP(1845IP)|| Greater Mark of Attack Speedx9 410IP(3690IP)

Quints: Greater Quintessence of Attack Damagex3 1025IP(3075IP) || Greater Quintessence of Movement Speedx3 2050IP(6150IP)

Cheapest Page : 8610IP for 9 AD Reds, 9 Armor Yellow, 9 MR Blue, 3 AD Quints

AP tanky jungle

Reds: Greater Mark of Magic Penetrationx9 410IP(3690IP)

Quint: Greater Quintessence of Movement Speedx3 2050IP(6150IP) || Greater Quintessence of Ability Powerx3 1025IP(3075IP)

Cheapest Page: 10455IP for 9 Magic Pen Red, 9 Armor Yellow, 9 Magic Resist Blue, 3 AP Quint

Hope I helped and good luck

edit: most of the time jungle runes work in lane and vice versa so it's nice to get the standard runes that I posted because they're easily interchangable

I've started buying the champs on sale each Tues. and Friday unless they are 1350 champs. I had planned on using IP to buy them once I had all my runes. Thanks for the help guys. I feel a lot better about being ready for runes once I hit lvl 21.

Some standard runes to look into:

glyphs-
Greater Glyph of Ability Power
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist
Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist

marks-
Greater Mark of Armor
Greater Mark of Attack Damage
greater mark of armor penetration
Greater Mark of Attack Speed
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration

quints-
Greater Quintessence of Armor
Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage
Greater Quintessence of Ability Power
Greater Quintessence of Magic Resist
Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed
Greater Quintessence of Gold (for supports)

seals-
Greater Seal of Armor
maybe Seal of Scaling Health

These will let you build basic runepages to match ALOT of champs. Some champs require some special pages (example, Draven like arpen quints AND marks instead of AD, since Spinning Axe gives extra damage on hit anyway to help with last hitting, and Jax, it can be argued, likes hybrid pen quints), but these are the basics. My suggestion is to choke out some cash and buy ip boosters (the daily ones if you play alot, the per win ones if you dont get to play too often). DO NOT get the exp boosters, you are already 19 and dont need to rush getting to 30. Play for a couple of weeks, ignore buying new champs, and focus all your efforts on getting the basic runes and variable runepages.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the help guys. This gives me a lot better idea not only how much I need initially, but also how long it should take me to buy everything I need.
