i don't really think that nintendo needs those flagships, as you say. it's just a matter of strategy, and i think they did a decent "out of the box" move about staying out of the Sony/Microsoft powerstruggle, witch nintendo would lose in a blink of an eye. Nintendo found a niche and is making it grow. dare i say, Wii is way more popular than what N64 ever dreamed to be. also N64 was a wierd release, and Sony made almost the same mistake with the PS3.

Wii had it's share because it has a completely different target consumer. not really for the die-hard gamer, but for the family gamer. WiiU was a bit of an ergonomic boost-release with very interesting features.

however, i'm not saying i worship Nintendo. since i had never put on the table buying Wii/PS3/360, i just think nintendo found a very interesting "getaway" strategy. Maybe i agree keeping exclusivity of things like Pokemon and Zelda are key to their success, but not having CoD or whatever is actually great for them, even in terms of consumer perspective of the product.

As requested to GMD himself.

you will NOT be forced to have online
if you have online, you can turn the social features off.
the rumor of no used games is just that, a rumor. it will play used games.

editing op for this.

Niche or not,

they missed stuff they should have included and therefore let ppl pay twice for the same thing...

You had a Wii... well now you got a WiiU... try selling your "old" console via eBay for like 10% of the original price at best.

And again, niche or not,

Nintendo definitely misses some flagships.
They always concentrate on the gimmicks, but never on some decent games.

Take WiiU for example:
How many ppl would actually buy it, if not for the gamepad and it's features?

There was only ONE game that they brought up as a puller: ZombieU. Was Ok.

And now they are desperately trying to get some good games lined up.
(Guess what: They got CoD...)

who knows. understanding corporate strategies is a whole science (and not). i accept it may have not turned out well in some aspects.

i can't know details about the strategies on releasing WiiU. also, confronting Sony and Microsoft on the same level, with the same weapons is a very dangerous game. Even the next example is a huge screwup on this matter, Sega got stomped when PS1 came out, then they cheated for dreamcast and got nailed. Sony is too big in R&D for traditional console companies to compete on the same level. Nintendo could never venture the same way Sony did with the ps3. simply too expensive with a very risky return.

note: i can't call CoD a good game. i had fun with it but it now is just a bad project, imo. =3
and there are interesting games for nintendo, such as metal gear (not sure if kojima guy is still good with plots). at least the name raises your eyebrow.

ontopic: bothers me that old games have to be streamed. i hope that my consoles would never break (rip, game gear) ='(

abridged version of the announcement:

as long as nintendo continues on their franchises (super smash, mario kart, legend of zelda, etc) then i think they will always have some pull for gamers.

gotta say the ps4 game that has me the most excited is killzone. it just looks fantastic. also bungie is going to be releasing their next game to ps4, that's pretty cool.

Thanks to Anal Samurai for the sig!

The thing is, Nintendo is a console for EVERYONE to enjoy. I always found that Playstation and Xbox was a niche market due to the cost of the console and the game prices (which are going up with this new console). In the end, the family crowd (that 'hardcore' gamers seem to forget about) end up spending all their video game entertainment funds on Nintendo.

Hence why I always prefer Nintendo consoles. Only thing that bug me however is that third-party developer always flee Nintendo console like plague because they all seem gimmicky now. When will they understand that have to always use those "gimmick" or that a game doesn't need to have amazing graphic to be great...
Thanks to TinyStar for making me this awesome sig

sega got screwed for being gimmicky, on their own way (sega saturn had a nightmarish processor programming and used squares as basic polygons, when PS1 had triangles)

I did play WiiU games.

And like I said, WiiU got no great line up at release.

And hey, I told you that Nintendo really misses some great flagships in the games section.

What are they doing? Trying to reach out for some big titles that definitely not belong in their "niche".
Not that they do it right, but they do exactly what I say they need to do, just not really in the right way...

I mean: Everyone here sees Nintendo mostly as the "Family/Party" -console, while PS and Xbox represent the "Gamers", right?

First big titles for WiiU release? Well.. kinda off dont you think?
