It's probably one of the more common things I do now.
I found that others who are just harassing you affect your play tremendously and put you in a pretty negative mood. So, if you completely cut them out, you're able to focus more on your play instead of peoples opinions.

muting people isnt that good, most of the time if someone is raging at you because you or someone else messed up its because theyre either a better player and will be the one calling out plays, and like satella said, offensive communication is better than no communication
honestly i only mute people if theyre spamming or if theyre just being annoying on purpose which is rare

Muting people is fine as long as you don't tell them about it, but you should only do it as last resort when you are 100% sure that the person will carry on being a **** no matter what.
Going all "Lol I muted you kthxbai" is worse than flaming though, as you not only destroy communication with a team member but also further discourage him from playing well.

Exactly as much as I hate toxicity in a game Communication wins games, which it has always puzzled me that you can report people for not communicating, when they are using a in game mechanic that enables them to not communicate.

^ yes but of course with this along with other things there is a line that should be drawn. i'm sure you all thought of this but when a person is being destructive/toxic with everything they say and simply downgrading everyone because they are raging; muting isn't necessarily a bad idea...you can still communicate with the rest of the crew that isn't screaming at you. listening to someone be 100% toxic is worse imo than dealing with it for the sake of communicating with that person.

How To Survive Solo Queue / ELO Hell In 3 easy steps.
Step 1- Champion Select and Role Preference.
Most of the time there’s an argument, it starts in Champion Select. There’s always someone who wants a specific role as well as 3 other people. When you enter the lobby, the best thing to say is, “I prefer X (The role you’re strongest at), I’m not as good with Y (Your least favorite role) but I’ll fill if necessary.”
80% of the time you’ll get the role you wanted in the first place and rarely you’ll get the role you least preferred. If you don’t get the desired role, then it’s still not the end of the world. Just try your best to be as helpful as possible. The important thing is that everyone’s not pissed off. Morale can play a big part of everyone’s overall performance during the game.
Step 2 - Communication / Teamwork / Morale
This is by far the most important step in the entire guide as well as your journey through ELO Hell. First and foremost, don’t rage at your teammates. This will cause an endless dispute over the internet (That’s literally worth nothing) which will cause demoralization throughout the team as well as yourself, as well as divert your focus and attention from the game being played and eventually lead to an inevitable loss. If you get mad at another player because of their skill, don’t be an ***, help their lane, talk them up, don’t ping them a trillion times either. Honestly that ****’s annoying for everyone. It’s a team game and requires teamwork to win.
When your teammates take an objective like Dragon, a tower, or even pick up a kill, just simply say; “Good job”, or “Well done”. Anything friendly that acknowledges their performance in a positive manner will make them play even stronger and will make it less likely that they’ll be disrespectful to others. A simple gesture can go a long way. Just a friendly mention of goodwork can overall boost your team’s confidence and you’ll find less angry or upset players. If you’re friendly, others will be more aware of your calls and willing to listen to suggestions or advice.
If all else fails and there’s still that one guy who is a complete *** and is harassing yourself or others nonstop, just mute him. That’s it. Advise your teammates to do the same. These players are toxic and bring a negative environment to yours, and everyone elses, play. It may not be the best case for team communication, but it provides a less distracting and more efficient environment for both you and your teammates. You can still communicate to ignored members of your team through pings.
Step 3 - Buy Wards!
Always buy a ward. Whenever you Recall and you have an empty slot in your inventory, purchase a sight ward. Vision is one of the most valuable things to have in League of Legends and any MOBA / ARTs really. Don’t waste that advantage. It’ll help you in lane more than you know, and it will allow your teammates the same advantage. (For instance, if you’re playing top lane and you ward River and the enemy jungler appears, Bot lane can now be much more aggressive because they don’t need to fear a gank anytime soon. Be sure to point out if you see someone missing or if you see the enemy jungler in a specific area.)
If you make the support buy all the wards, he’s going to be broke. On top of that, with only one person buying wards, your vision will be much more scarce and limited, as well as you won’t have any strong support items late game that help the team. (Things like Runic Bulwark, or Iron Salari [Though Iron Salari is more common on Junglers, it’s just an example]) Just remind everyone to buy wards and ward the various places.

TL;DR:
Step 1 - Be a team player and fill roles, or at least play more than 1 thing.
Step 2 - Communicate. Don’t be an ***, acknowledge people for doing well. Mute Idiots / Trolls / *******s that are effectively distracting you and crippling your play.
Step 3 - Buy Wards
