as a person that has been homeless myself i find his story very stupid, its not touching or anything he can survive if he really tried hard enough, walking around with a cup is not trying to survive at all, i was homeless and wanna know what me and my family did? we worked to get money, there are places you can work without dressing up in a suit

subscriptions to gyms cost money, the first thing we did was get jobs anywhere we could, basically things we could find on craigslist for some quick cash and sold things including clothes and etc until we could rent a place to live, we did live with friends for a short time
the thing is hes alone because of other things, he probably has friends that he can stay with and probably did stay with them for a short time but he got kicked out because of his lack of trying to work, or other bad qualities he has
you can get out of a hole like that if you actually try and like i said before walking around with a cup begging for change isnt trying to get out of the hole its trying to do as little as you can so you stay in the hole

You both are right. It is a bad idea to beg for money with a cup if you want stability tbh. But this guy could have a hard time taking any job since his black. Noone will admit that he is racist but you know the reality. I am not an US citizen so i cant tell exactly how it looks like out there, and this has HUGE influence on judging this situation but in Poland there are "groups" of ppl that WORK like that. Begging.
This is fairly common to see an old lady with a rosary in hand and cup in other.

Usualy the babies are not even theirs. They borrow the kids to beg, or if the mother has its own child it is usualy taken and swapped with another begger to ensure that she doesnt escape.
They are given a place that is even secured by a "begger bodyguard" that if som1 out of the "group" tries to take over etc, he/she is srsly beaten and ppl dont care.
They make more money that a lower mid normal worker would ever get, and dont pay any tax for it.

There are normaly working ppl that beg in their free time, I even know a story of a elderly woman that was living out of renting her 2 out of 3 apartaments also begging on the street and she said she was doing that becouse it is "such an easy and big money".
The community is getting more aware of this fact and guess what happens? The realy needing ppl are getting sucked into this or beaten by trying to beg in the "wrong" place.
Also many beggers are usualy here in an alcoholic addiction. They can get a warm meal and a place to stay but they would have to drop drinking. And they dont feel like doing so so they are placing themselves in this situation.

Getting into it, not usualy their "fault". It is quite common to get there via alcohol, drugs, relationships, lazyness etc.
You cant say usualy its not their fault in those and this is quite common if you ask me.
Remaining in such situation is a choice. Not fault. It's their choice. This can be changed by simply making them talk and talking to them. Providing information, education etc.
You can take as an example micro-loans that are implemented in 3rd world coutries. Where organisations instead of providing food, water, shelters etc (which is simply STUPID! it makes them dependant on those supplies instead of making them independant and accualy help them in long term. Build wells with fresh water etc instead of providing and importing bottled water, but it is cash cash cash for "make a better world" foundations, and ofc for the religion/church. They give food to people that "believe" how lame is that? Ofc those are common but they are not the norm).

DEWO, it is interesting to hear what that situation is like in your country. We have similar issues in this country (at least where I'm from).
I used to live in Atlanta (a big city) and you see homeless people and beggars all the time.
There are some people that make a full-time job of it and drive away from their "job" in nice cars. There are some people that are addicted to drugs and would only use the money you give them to buy more. There are some people that actually harass and try to scare you into giving them money. There are some people that could legitimately use help and would spend the money wisely. However, there's usually no way to tell who is who so the smartest way to help them would usually be to work at a soup kitchen (place where volunteers make food and give it away), or give them food rather than money.
I think some people are legitimately trapped in this situation, but they are a small percentage. It is sad that people are being hurt and unable to get other people to help them because others who don't need help are exploiting generous / naive people. True, there's probably SOMETHING they can do themselves but it becomes very, very hard to get out of being homeless when you get to a certain point. Not very many places would want to hire you. Lots of workplaces require you to provide a home address, phone, etc.
DEWO, I do also prefer the idea of using good will donations to encourage business rather than just give them things. For instance, if you would donate a few herd animals instead of food their can use those animals to create a bigger herd and eventually make profit from it. Another I've heard of teaches people how to make a well / water pump that can be operated by pumping it with your legs. Etc etc. These ideas are great and help more in the long run.
