Doesn't that punishment require an actual weapon to make the threat with? Because if you can get 7 years for threatening somebody with imaginary weapons then you can color me surprised.
Perhaps, the uncredible news source might've left out that tid bit about the subject in OP having a gun. Oops! Still waiting for a more credible news site to do an article on this.

Judge: The defendant is being charged with terrorism for making a ******ed threat about shooting up a school as a comeback remark to his friend calling him insane. How does the defendant plead?
Carter: Worth it, because I said so in chat.
Carter could also plead insanity, as clearly his friend is the most reliable source possible on the state of Carter's own mind.

Clever :)
"If someone is ****, you point at them and declare "****!". Because this is the internet." - Serpentiferous
"The Internet: where men are men, women are men, and little girls are the FBI." - ???

So a comedian can make a joke about this without saying it's a joke afterwards(I'm sure mr. policeman would've been rofl), and an 18 year old guy who says it's a joke two times can't? Sounds good.
Or can't comedians make such jokes in the USA?

Made me rofls.
Honestly he created this problem himself. I don't feel bad for him in the slightest.
Do I think he deserves 8 years in prison? obviously not.
Do I think he deserves some form of punishment like community service? probably, it was a threat, albeit it was sarcastic
I can't say "bomb" in an airport nor can I say "fire" in a movie theater. Does it make it okay if I say either and then say "lol jk" right after yelling them out? Nope.
Justin Carter did something dumb on the internet, a threat is a threat, regardless if you say "jk" afterwards or claim it was intended to be sarcastic
