Depends which tank you're playing, to be honest.
Some tanks are supposed to sit on the enemy "push push kill kill" champions, some are supposed to sit near your team.
Give us an example of who you play.
Well, I purchased Maokai as my first tank to learn. I don't THINK I'm doing too terribly, but it's hard to tell, since the stat-line doesn't seem to dictate whether or not a tank did his job (though high assists, I assume, is a good indicator).
I haven't messed with jungling yet because...well, because I'll get to that eventually.

For Maokai specifically, put your Ultimate under your carries and use the Knockback part of arcane smash to knock people away. Use

So, after quite a few matches as Maokai, I think I have a pretty good understanding of the tank's role in the lane. It definitely makes a world of a difference if I'm paired with a player who recognizes when I'm about to snare/slow (and if that player is a champ that deals damage in quick bursts).
What I found to be the worst is when I'm paired with a 'fraidy cat--someone who doesn't follow my lead when I snare the champ, but instead runs back before we can make any impact. I assume, given that it's pre-30 we're talking about, that these players are waiting for "easy" kills, and that they're incorrectly assuming that I'm snaring in order to do the bulk of the damage myself.
Seems like it's mostly a pace thing that separates a tank from your more standard DPS (I know you guys don't use the term "DPS" around here, but you know what I mean). I'm luring and trapping more than I am harassing and wearing down. Teamwork is everything.
As for the build, I've just been stocking up on stuff that has auras that benefit my allies. Can't remember the names of any of this stuff. I also throw in a dash of AP if it seems like we're struggling to finish the job.
Well, I guess it's time for me to learn how to start jungling. *sigh* Baby steps...

like 80% of pre-30 players are obvious silver and bronze smurfs
lol not for long for I will pull myself out of bronze and into silver, and from there I will make gold, get demoted proceed to sulk about it, then go on to get diamond.
and on a side note adding to the thread like TehAsain said what kinda of champs are you using
