I was thinking, why aren't some champions seen in the top lane as often? I for example played Maokai top against a Wukong and it worked wonders. Other champs such as Trundle, Sejuani, Amumu, Alistar etc. shouldn't have any problem in the top lane. Right? Or am I missing something?
I'm going to try a few different champs top from now on and see where it takes me.

Meta and fotm and whatnot...

Play whatever you like. I suggest doing it in normals first, because in ranked you might get talked at in not very loving manners.

Of those you mentioned, Amumu top lane is terribad. The rest can do decently.

Most of the ones you listed are bad. They all have their own problems which leave them worse than the fotm ones.

Trundle has no gapclose and is basically another Udyr.

Sejauni has mana issues, and lane problems.

Amumu has lane problems, and mana issues

Alistar has scaling issues, and mana issues.

Maokai top has mana issues and presence issues

(these problems are just brief overviews of the champs)

i guess Trundle would work fine on top, passive early game and then like top lane Udyr is he could be a great duelist i guess

haven't tried it, though, so correct me if i'm wrong.

Trundle is a decent top laner, his Q can give him the upper hand on some matchups, along with his steroid on that massive AoE ice thingy that is W. You need to make use of Pillar of Ice in order to do anything or escape and that's not exactly easy.
Later on he's a good duelist and is kind of meh in teamfights. Like many champions, he's just outclassed by others.

Most of the champions you've listed are either CC bots with no damage scaling whatsoever ( Sejuani, Alistar) or they simply are very mana-inefficient or have very lousy earlygames. Amumu basically loses against anyone in lane and I can't really see Maokai beating anybody.

Udyr top is horrible... Trundle top is horrible too...

The fact that you can't gapclose is a HUGE issue for a bruiser like Udyr.

It is horrible everywhere. For everything he does, there is a champion that can do a better job in top lane.

Karma top is a sustain/poke monster with some utility and very High base damages!

Jarvan top has High early game damage and loads of utility, lackluster late game damage though.
