I watched Clannad because my friend said it was really sad. I watched it all, stopped watching it at times cause it got boring. I only saw one "sad" scene, but other than that it's not really worth crying over. Unless I'm some cold hearted ***** or something but I guess I missed all the sad parts.
Most of the sad is in the second season, Clannad: After Story. And if you found the first season boring, I can imagine why you wouldn't have gotten to the second. Then again, although it was kinda' heart-string-pulling, I don't think it's the sort of thing someone'd cry over even in the second season.

Monogatari series finally gave the fans what they always wanted to see
Up to date with season 2 so far. My all time favourite anime didn't disappoint me, not even a little bit.
...
When it comes to incest or underage sexual relations the Monogatari series does not shy away!

Now what I found sad was Ano Hana
Bleh. I found the ending terrible. I mean, holy ****, so much screaming. It's like they thought screaming would somehow make the scenes more emotional (hint: it doesn't).
Aside from the terrible ending it was pretty good, but I wouldn't call it remarkable.
"I saw [Twilight: Eclipse] in theaters with a girl I was dating at the time. I spent more time staring at my toes and wiggling them than I did watching this abomination. When Edward proposed to Blank Face, I finally looked up with a revelation.
I blurted out loud, in a dead silent theater full of teenage girls on opening night "Wait a minute, Edward has no blood flow. How does he get an erection?" I heard several men laughing, and had several girls turn and stare at me.
I did not get laid that night." - Berengier817

Based on those top five, I think you'll probably like Mushishi best. Although, I haven't actually watched Gintama, so I'm saying this mostly based on what I've heard about it. Also, more generally, Mushishi is excellent and you should definitely watch it.
