OOooh, my friend showed me that Google phone, its pretty nice. The only thing I know is that usually they get their updates decades before we get any Android updates. I don't know... I'm not much of an iPhone person like everyone else. I just prefer the HTC cause it never let me down, I dropped it and it still works, its durable, and it's quick. Now for software I don' know much about that... As long as my apps run smoothly and fast I'm alright I guess.

Yeah, lol. Nexus devices and the Google Play Edition phones are getting Android 4.4 right now (quite literally) while after a quick google search I could find out that the HTC One got Android 4.3 roughly a week ago and will allegedly get 4.4 in late January. Most devices out right now won't even get an update to 4.3 or 4.4 at all. 4.2 is the most common version in new phones right now, I believe.

I'm really excited for the new ART compiler in Android 4.4 myself, cuz ridiculous increases in performance and battery life when computing code on the CPU (i.e: when running pretty much any apps) :3
But it's not just about the version number, even if that does bring a fair amount of updates with it.
It's also about the interface. Most manufacturers (like HTC and Samsung) put these colorful "skins" on top of the standard Android look. These skins slow the phone down and more often than not are designed in a very inconsistent manner. Most manufacturers simply do not design to the standard that Google does.
As an example of the slowing down: I just recently took a quick look at a new Samsung phone. It had 700MB RAM in use. A Nexus would have about 500MB RAM in use in the same scenario. That's a pretty big difference.
The storage space of a Samsung Galaxy S4 is 8.4-9.2GB (depending on region) out of the box for the 16GB version. I'm guessing it's about the same for the HTC One. Meanwhile the Nexus 5 sits on 11.5GB free space on the 16GB version.
