high MPen, buy HP
low MRes, buy AP
what if I am AP playing against a player who has bought armor, attack damage and/or critical strike? (maybe a tank or AD player)

That is situational. But if you notice you are playing a zed who has not brought MR blues: punish that ****. If your opponent is bring the wrong thing to the party you need to punish him by harassing and forcing bad trades for him. Also if it is an AD mid, Doran's shield is thing that is useful to EVERYONE.

If they're buying armor, it doesn't matter a whole lot if you're an AP caster. Attack damage though, maybe buy a
Seeker's Armguard for the defense/offense split. Crit chance doesn't matter too much unless you're against a Gangplank, which is rare to see midlane.
