I often invent new builds in league of legends because I want to play things different than others and unique for my style. This day, the focus for a new build was on this item:

I thought about, how could you use this item to the most usefull way. Of course, you will need a good amount of HP and some MR aswell. About the MR, there is only one item which fits into the AD/MR style:

So, 2 items set, HP left. Of course, there are many HP items and 2 different ways to approach:

1. Full Tank HP Items

2. Support Tank HP Items

face of the mountain

I have chosen the support one here combined with the Warmog's Armor because it is better to afford and actually has more uses for the team than just raw stats. So current build is:

face of the mountain

Boots will be Ninja Tabi, because it is botlane and you are a meele because of face of the mountain.

So, now the question is, which botlane meele support could use this? He needs the following things:
  • AS-steroid so he can use the AD and crit
  • Bonus Armor and MR because it is a bit meh atm
  • A good amount of CC so he can initate and don't be useless.

This leads to the following champ:

And now, the finalisation:

Runes

Precision
Fleet Footwork
Phase Rush

Gold so you can afford your build, armor and mr should be explaining themself and AD so you got more killing potential, because Xin Zhao bot is always a kill lane.

Item Sequence

Health Potion 50
Health Potion 50
Health Potion 50
Warding Totem Removed 0
Boots 300
Targon's Buckler 400
Ninja Tabi 1100
Chain Vest 800
Timeworn Face of the Mountain 2100
Ruby Sightstone 1600
Greater Vision Totem 250
Atma's Impaler 2300
Maw of Malmortius 3100
Warmog's Armor 3100
Enchantment: Furor 450

A general build order.

General Support Summoners:

Good Partners:

He has the burst combined with your damage and lockdown to accomplish a great killlane.

Similar to Graves, high damage.

The real bruiser killlane with double face of the mountain.

Finally, tested it in a normal game and succeed.

So, this is how I invent my new builds. How do you do?
He is gonna kill you!!!

When I "invent new builds", all I do is switch around one or two items of the standard build for that champion, or play an AD champion AP and viceversa. If you're making an entirely different build in which none of the items coincide with the popular items for that champion, the build probably sucks ****, because you're not using any of the best items for that champion.

Nicknamemy proves to us once again that yes, the inner dark realms of bronze and unranked can strike fear into the most experienced veterans.

I just randomly shop the ingame store and when I see an item or something where I think: How would that work together with a certain champion?

Then I will look at how I could make a build that synergises with that particular idea and often fail drastically with the build in the end (eg manamune+atmas Singed cuz passive) :3

Don't start a build by picking a bad/mediocre item (or any item for that matter) and then thinking "hmm, what should I add to this and who will I play using this?". Start with a champion, then go to items. Think about the stats that your champion will benefit from given the kit and role you're playing it in, then think of the most efficient way to get those stats. Also remember to adapt based on how well the game is going and what you're facing.

If you don't want to pick a champion, start with a role, then specify what kind of champion you want to play in that role (for example: tanky top laner or high damage top laner?) and think of some general items that work well on that kind of champion. Then pick a champion you feel like trying out (or play a couple of different ones in a row and see which one you like most), adapt the build if necessary based on the champion's kit, how well the game is going or what you're facing and optimise it.

It's not rocket science :P

This.

The whole item thing I do has proven to be a very bad idea, although it has given some hilarious situations. If you want to do it right however, you play a champion, not a build, it is better to do the experimenting the other way around indeed :P

If your definition of fun is playing a champion 50% as strong as he should be, then yes I agree.

That shouldn't be a problem if you still win and you know you have done it with something nobody else did.
