I don't get that logic.
You can definitely improve in normals. I would argue that its the best way for newbies to get better. People around you aren't giving their best, but you still are and you should improve off of that regardless. Positioning, CS, objective control, dueling, teamfighting, etc. Eveything that happens in ranked also happens in normals.
I get miffed when going ranked and someone is 'trying something new'. **** that, try in normals, see how you do and then try it in ranked.

Guys, you can improve by watching streams of really good players. I know I have. That's not even playing the game. If you can improve without even playing the game, you can sure as hell improve while playing normals.
There's a million ways to get better at the game. They're good for different things. Normals have their place, as do ranked games. ARAMs can be useful, as can pro streams, as can breaks from the game and simple stuff like getting enough sleep and eating well. There is no one solution. Don't tell people that certain things are useless for improving. Nothing is useless for improving, except the idea that certain things are useless for improving.
@OP: I'm glad you're feeling better about how you're doing now. That's a good place to be, so keep it up. But if you find yourself in the kind of negative mindset that your first post indicated again, try taking a break from League for a few days. Do something else: play some other games or watch some movies or read some books or whatever you like to do besides League. Then come back and see how you do. I find, a lot of the time, that by not doing something for a while, it gives my subconscious time to go over what I've been doing wrong and correct it without me even noticing, so when I come back I'm better than I was when I stopped. If nothing else, a couple of days break from League will help you feel good and fresh when you start back in, which really does translate into better play.

@lifebaka: hell yeah. Learnt so much from Krepo my support play jumped a few levels. He and other streamers like scarra, Voyboy, Trick2g, Sirchez and a few lesser known dudes take their time to explain everything that is happening and what/why they are doing this and that. Ridiculously informative and educating.

Thresh hooks though, that **** come from practice and I need lots of it.

yeah same here. probably 60-70% of my improvement has come from high elo streams another 10-20% from mobafire discussions and guides and the last amount from practice. i just don't have the time to play 10 games a day or whatever. i am lucky to get a game in a day during the work week and lucky to get 10 games over a weekend.

You can improve in normals but only to a point. Eventually you will realise that you can get away with quite a lot of crazy/stupid **** in normals, and that's when you should move on to ranked.
It's true that most people play normals for lulz because there is nothing to lose and nothing to gain.
I don't play LoL anymore.

Not necessarily. Meta keeps shifting, new tactics keep coming, everything keeps changing. Sometimes if some new possible opportunity comes by for a champion+role combo, then it is wise to test it first before you use it in ranked. If you just bought a champion you have never played before, it might be wise as well to test it in normals first. As long one needs testing, normals will be useful for improving.

Getting a little tired of these kind of posts. I play normals almost exclusively because I have pretty bad ranked anxiety (and I don't like playing alone anyway), does that mean I can't improve my mechanics, learn new champions, learn things about matchups? Why do people have this idea that no one in normals plays to win and tries his/her best?
@OP
Most of what I would tell you has already been said, but yeah, I would definitely encourage anyone to work on farming. It is a vital mechanic in this game, yet also one that is so easy to work on because you have to do it pretty much all the time (unless you're jungle/support ofc) :P
Good luck! :)
As Xeras as pointed out, majority of players don't try in normal, they test new champs, new playstyles, new builds, or just troll with friends...with that in mind, chances are theres at least 1 of the 10 summoners in the game, doing this... its hard to digest, but its true.
I tell everyone i mentor, or to those who are wanting to just get good... I tell them simply...don't play normal, play ranked.
Why? Well think about it.
ranked is more competitive.
competitiveness drives a player to play better in general
ranked has a incentive to win
incentive = tryhard
ranked has less trolls
ranked has less casual players (so less bad players)
as you progress in ranked, you face better opponents
better opponents = you get better faster - why? problem solving.
the list goes on.
On topic, the player here is asking why hes not improving, i did over extend my comment, normal can be good, normal you can improve, but its much slower than ranked, and tbh there is a ceiling in normal where you just stop getting better, you just become an average casual player, which is fine, i have no problems with casual gamers, or players who just want to play normal because of ranked anxiety, but if you're a player who spams normals and complains about not seeing an improvement, or a player who has 4k normal, and 100 ranked and complains about elo hell and why you're stuck in bronze, well im sorry but i'm going to get mad... because people who say this have gone full ******.
Want to get better, play ranked not normal, concentrate on YOUR game, don't worry about the teemo top whos going warmogs and banshees, don't worry about the vayne jungle, people who worry about other players tend to fail. Play the game how its meant to be played, if you're going 15/0 a game but losing, so what? most of the good players have been there, eventually you'll come to a point where bronze...silver...gold, even plat is just easy to carry out off. if you're stuck in silver for 300 ranked, again, don't worry, keep playing...sooner or later, or seasons later, you'll get that diamond, that challenger, just because you had a 20-minute surrender, doesn't mean you didn't improve. Analyse your game, analyse your strengths and play to them.
I'm not the best of players, i'm not saying listen to me, but i've been stuck in bronze for 300 games, ive been in silver [season 1], i've been gold for 1,000 ranked, i've been in platinum, grinding my way through games going 10/0 for 1,000+ ranked...and now look where I am... after all that grind. But as a word of warning, diamond 1 isn't what its cracked up to be...
:)
happy hunting, gl and hf.
P.S to the people saying watching streams can improve your gameplay and mechanics, well, it can, but only to a certain extent; most streamers have played 2,000+ ranked, most streamers have experience, and best of all, most streamers are professional. So just because someone is playing sion jungle, doesn't mean it will work for you, why? because you've only played 100 rank games, and like 600 normal, you're inexperienced, you lack general analysis of the game, and mechanics. This is just an outline, its not true for everyone, but i wouldn't just watch streams all day and expect that magically you'll become good too. It takes practice, so switch that stream off and go play if you want to improve.

But if you learn that champion and keep playing normals, you will find yourself start doing worse.
It's hard to practice certain things in normals because they almost never happen. People play normals to practice, troll around and hang out with friends (which often involves lots of ****ing around).

You need to log in before commenting.
Because most of them don't. Give me one good reason to tryhard in a normal when in 90% of the games I can easily win with 1/10th of the effort?
In normals I randomly dive in the enemy team, I position stupidly, I make ridiculously risky plays that I would never dream of making in ranked (that would usually fail), I get thirsty for kills and forget to cs and it's not just me, it's everyone I play with. Ranked is much, much more competitive and you actually get people trying their hardest most of the time.
Basically, in normals people usually play just to have fun. It's different when people play so that they can climb the ladder. They want to win then.
That's just not true though :|
If I randomly dive into the enemy team in a normal game, I die. If I position stupidly in a normal game, I die. The only thing you might be right about is that there's a difference in the risks people take. I'd argue taking those risks actually makes you learn more than playing cautious though, because you get to know more about the exact limits of the champ you're playing at a certain stage in the game.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to argue that everyone always tryhards like it's a ranked game, but from my experience people definitely (try to) play well in the large majority of their games, which is why I find it so annoying when people pretend like no one gives a **** in normals and you can't improve by playing them.
