Heard about it, never played it though. I hear it's one of the most mature MMOs out there where the lore is practically written by the past 10 years of gameplay.
But I guess it's a subscription model and I hate those things.

********'s a pretty good fertilizer
Played it for a few months. Never really got stuck though.
There was a lot that I liked about the game, but ultimately I think it was the grinding paired with the reliance on other players for interesting content that kind of made me lose interest.
MMOs with lots of progression have to balance the need for solo content along with the multiplayer content delicately.
MMOs in general have never really been my thing though, because of how incredibly grindy they are.
I get bored real fast when pretty much all I do in a game is grinding.

Considered to play it once but haven't really gotten in to any other MMO than World of Warcraft, played Vanilla, TBC, WotLK and pretty much stopped playing at cataclysm because they kinda ruined the game with that expansion but I struggled with Mists of Pandaria up to lvl 89 before I got bored.
Been trying to play other mmos like Age of Conan, Rift, Global Agenda, Star Wars, Guild Wars 2, Neverwinter, Elder Scrolls Online, Wildstar and Arche Age but never got hooked. New WoW does look interesting but I don't think I will try it.
EvE online looks cool though and I've watched a few streams on it but I think my mmorpg phase is over because there is no game that can give me the same feeling I had with Vanilla WoW when it came out, which is kinda what I'm hoping for every time I try a new one.

No, but it is sometimes considered a game of spreadsheets due to the amount of logistical work you do in the game. Generally, people who play League will find EVE extremely boring.
Also, Latest, you are correct. It is currently pushing 12 years of (nearly) continuous service (they have server downtime, and have been ddosed several times). The owners of it, CCP, simply make the mechanics of the game. The stories, however, are made by the players.
