For the next 12 seconds, Aatrox gains 40 / 50 / 60% bonus attack speed and 225 bonus attack range (375 total range). He is still considered melee for item purposes.
Building AP, would cripple his other abilities. But adding a tri force might be benefitial, mostly because it also gives you AD, AS, health, crit chance, MS and the Phage and Spellblade passives.
