That being said, I'm not super stoked about them and I'm also kinda stoked. Let's start at the top of changes I'm for lack of better phrase, in favor of.
- Casting Threaded Volley on Worked Ground now only requires 1 mana. Is this kinda dumb? Yes. Because at any point in a team fight, do I really want to be standing on Worked Ground? Of course not. The place where we benefit super hard from this, is trading in lane. Taliyah trading with full Threaded Volley Q's in lane hitting our opponenet was already super easy trade-win. But now, especially with Aery is our keystone? We save mana and win trades like it's cool. Think of it like LeBlanc launching a Q at you in lane and never having to suffer mana issues from it. You can widdle down any opponent with good positioning. This also makes it SUPER easy to CS on Taliyah in the early game, which is ultimately what we want to get our snowball going. Mess up your auto attack on a minion? NP, hit em with a quick Q on Worked Ground for no mana penalty and an easy last hit.
I'm completely okay with her passive, definitely a buff for us.
W Cooldown down to 12 seconds at all Ranks. Definitely a buff.
E damage nerfed but it's not something we can't work around, no big deal.
Weaver's Wall reduced to 5 seconds at all ranks. Big nerf for sure, but nothing we can't work around. We can still use it in some solid situations for major game changing plays.
The biggest takeaway for me from this patch is killing the AOE on Taliyah's Q. It wasn't a massive Area of Effect in the first place and to completely remove it really drives me crazy. However, no big deal, we'll roll with the punches and will shine bright like the Shuriman Princess Taliyah is. Much <3, wishing you the best in your adventures with Taliyah and I hope you stick with her!
Rod of Ages is a great item on Taliyah and always will be, especially into Assassins. The downfall to Rod of Ages is that her early game isn't AS strong as the more aggressive build paths, like Luden's Echo. The best times to take Rod of Ages are when you're playing in a scaling win condition or up against heavy divers (think Wukong, LeBlanc, Fizz, Camille, Talon.) Rod of Ages can give you excellent sustain and some extra beefy stats when going up against enemies like this.
I do however like it up against Cassiopeia, Ahri, and Ryze. :D
made an account to comment this haha waiting for your reply since I want to master Taliyah as well.
Ultimately, Taliyah has two play styles that I like to classify her into. The Solo Queue play style and the professional play style. You may notice if you watch many LCS tier players, they tend to build Taliyah differently than what my guide suggests. However, in Solo Queue, we aim to carry ourselves to climb the ladder and as such, we have to build Taliyah optimally in order to play to her strengths.
Taliayh thrives in the early & mid game against enemies; and while I don't like to use the term "falls off" she certainly gets to a point where she's not as strong as other late game Mages such as Azir, Cassiopeia, or Ryze.
Because of that, we aim to snowball hard in the early game in order to close out solo queue games during the mid to late game. You'll notice that Taliyah's win rate in Solo Queue tends to fall hard below the 50% mark as we get further into the late game (See here http://champion.gg/champion/Taliyah/Middle?league=undefined).
In order to snowball, we cannot waste our precious early game time with wasting gold on items that don't come online until the mid to late game. Therefore, the theory on the build path is this;
• Lost Chapter solves our early game Mana Issues
• Sorcerer's Shoe's gives us early game mobility, along with Mana Penetration, a key attribute that Taliyah thrives on, especially in the early game.
• Oblivion Orb adds to our early game Magic Penetration, allowing us to slice down tanks and carries quickly early on, which in turn leads to our snowballing.
At this point, we've now solved 3 things and can look to finish our Core Build, while hopefully supporting ourselves to be ahead early and staying ahead into the mid to late game. It's at this point that we can now finish Seraph's Embrace scaling and move on to our other big ticket items.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions on any thing I posted, let me know and I'll reply as soon as possible. Thanks <3
1. What build path would You recommend in most ways, like should I be building Lost Chapter, then Sorcerer's Boots, Oblivion Orb after that, without building Seraph's Embrace before penetration items?
Build path right now in 8.4 and beyond with Taliyah can feel a little wonky, compared to our previous Core build and the way we utilize Archangel's Staff compared to other Mages that go the Archangel Staff route. The reason for it is because we don't necessarily have insane mana consumption at any point in the game. While we are still a Mage, were not like the Ryze's and Cassiopeias where we need to scale and build lots of mana. However, Archangel's Staff scales really well on Taliyah right now and provides us the extra shield as well in the mid to late game as we finish our Seraph's Embrace.
Ultimately, it came down to not changing the core dynamic of Taliyah's early game snowball potential, which in turn lead to building up Tear of the Goddess a little later into the game, but we can scale that mana very quickly compared to other Mages.
The ideal build path is indeed Lost Chapter (Solves our Mana) > Sorcerer's Shoes (Gives us the mobility to begin roaming early and quickly) > Oblivion Orb (Mana Penetration, a key stat that Taliyah thrives with) > Finishing Archangel's Staff in any order to begin our scaling of Abilty Power and Mana with the item > Haunting Guise because I believe it's a very strong item that is underrated at the moment and fits Taliyah's kit well going into the mid to late game. At this point, you can now finish your build. I tend to finish Liandry's Torment, then weigh my options on Void Staff or Death Cap. Death cap feels much easier to build now and gives a ton more AP (We can get over 800 Ability Power now w/ an Elixir.)
2. Is building Rylai's scepter still a viable thing on Taliyah?
Rylai's Crystal Scepter is absolutely still viable on Taliyah and can be really enjoyable, as well as beneficial to play with. The trouble with Rylai's is that it's still very underwhelming to play with right now. In some matches with a very highly mobile team that I feel like I need to provide extra peeling and controlling for my team, I will build Rylai's Crystal Scepter in place of Liandry's Torment. However, I would say that out of every 10 games, I might build Rylai's 1 time. It's just extremely tough to fit into my ideal build right now, but I am looking at ways to get it back into the build, because I truely love the item on Taliyah. Oh, and If I do build it, I usually replace Rabadon's Deathcap for it.
3. What do You think about changes on AP items in general? Does it make her even better and fit her in overall?
The Ability Power changes seemed a bit daunting at first. It truely is a lot of change ups, especially in the season where things are getting into full swing with climbing the ladder. In general, I wouldn't say I like it or dislike it. I side with Riot in saying that it was super old watching every Mage taking the same build paths every time. I love that you can play a cool cookie cutter style that fits YOUR playstyle, rather than having the 1 option that solves every thing you need on a Mage (Morellonomicon). As far as fitting Taliyah in, I really believe that Taliyah will always be a strong Meta champion and will regularly see play by top competitors, both professionally and in Solo Queue. Her kit is extremely well designed, offering glaring weaknesses and incredible strength to play to, mixed in with team synergy that can always be used. I would also argue she is and likely always will be a Top 3 Control Mage when it comes to Mid Lane Mages.
