Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
There are many available options for runes, but I have chosen my combination for the following reasons.
1)Health Quintessences are excellent for early game ganks and getting the all important first blood.
2)Armor Penetration Marks allow Alistar to do damage to turrets more than most tanks. Since his attack speed is incredibly slow, it is necessary to capitalize on every hit.
3)Dodge Seals, when used in conjunction with the Ninja Tabi and investment in the defensive mastery tree, give Alistar over a 20% dodge chance. Blocking 1 in 5 attacks is desirable for any tank.
4)Glyphs of Cooldown Reduction decrease the time needed for Alistar to recharge his ultimate.
Since Alistar is a support character through and through, I like his summoner skills to reflect that role. Clairvoyance is great for checking grasses and Baron. Considering that Alistar has a pitifully slow base speed, Ghost provides a much needed speed boost and is necessary for performing the quintessential Pulverise->Headbutt Combo. Other good skills include Flash and Ignite, which can be used to great effect.
A pretty straightforward skill tree. The only absolutely necessary skill is the 2% increase in dodge chance, which will help with avoiding tons of damage. The investment in utility helps Alistar refill his pitifully low mana bar faster.
Strategy with Alistar
Although one of the least played champions in League of Legends, Alistar is an absolutely excellent tank, laning partner, and combat initiator.
First off, grab a Meki Pendant for mana regeneration and a health and mana pot. This will ensure that Alistar can lane indefinitely, particularly since he already has a healing move. Early game, the key with Alistar is to last hit minions. His attack speed is very low, so it is essential to learn how to time his normal attack to kill minions. Alistar will not be getting many kills throughout the course of the game, so getting money from minions is necessary. When laning early game, I like to play defensively so that Alistar is close to his own tower. When opponents get too greedy, Alistar can simply Pulverize the ground, walk behind the enemies popped into the air, and Headbutt them into the turret. This is an excellent way to get some early kills and assists. When you have enough gold, but a chalice of harmony for mana regen and magic resist. For boots, I like the Ninja Tabi because of the Dodge chance. When combined with Dodge runes and a defensive mastery, Alistar will have a 20% dodge chance! Other possible options for boots include the Boots of Mobility and the Boots of Swiftness. I like buying the Heart of Gold next for the extra gold income, which will allow Alistar to afford more expensive items later.
Mid game, Alistar can use his heal to realize his full pushing potential. By healing his laning partner and minions, enemy turrets should drop in no time whatsoever. When team fights start, Alistar's role is Crowd Control. He should rush into the enemy team using either flash or ghost, pop his ultimate to avoid damage, use Pulverize to knock the opposing team into the air, and then headbutt the enemy Carry into your team. Hopefully, the team fight will become a 5v4, and the rest will be cake. The next couple items in Alistar' build really depend upon the team he is fighting against. If the team is equal in both DPS and Magic, Alistar should invest in Banshee's Veil and Sunfire Capes. Banshee's Veil gives much needed mana, and Sunfire Capes allow Alistar to farm more effectively and even jungle if need be. Against magic heavy teams, go for Force of Nature. Against physical teams, go for Thornmail or more Sunfire Capes. The Guardian Angel is also a solid choice for Alistar.
Other possibilities for items include the Aegis of the Legion and the Innervating Locket for team buffs. However, from my own experience as Alistar, I have found that it is more effective for Alistar to invest in his own survivability lest he should die quickly during team fights.
Late game strategy is similar to mid. Run with a couple other champions and absorb damage for the more frail members of your team. Help push turrets, and defend when necessary.
I hope you have found my guide to Alistar useful. He is the second least played champion according to League of Legends Statistics Databse (http://www.lolbase.net/champions), but I can't understand why. Alistar is an outstanding tank, and makes an excellent addition to most teams. I welcome any comments you might have.
