You suggest to start with the tear, and after that buy the rod of ages, even if you start with the blasting wand and not the Catalyst, your damage is so delayed.
for what is the question, you go first tear, which gives you mana only, ap varus has absolutly NO mana issues, the catalyst would be more than enough.
So the only reason you do that is to have a bit more ap late game through archangel passive 3% ap thing.
Do you really think screowing so much varus early and mid game is it worth, that you get a bit more ap from that passive, on the other hand you delay your lategame so much, cause either you do a level 2 kill or you can never get agressive again against most top champs. Not to mention that with no attack speed and no w scaling from ap, your farming capability is really bad.
