Introduction
(will add in the future if it makes for easier viewing and understanding.. does it? let me know - help me improve this and future guides)
Head off to the jungle with standard items. Armor
and 5 Potions
, although you should not need all 5, once you get a couple camps down, you can use them to heal for ganks or even just use them and save your mana by not having to use Fracture
.
This will eventually build into Madred's Razors
and then into Blood Razors
.
After Blood Razors
and Merc Treads
, pick up Sheen
. The AoE of your Q ability is amazing for procing this item: there is no reason to wait to pick this item up.
Your next item to pick up is Phage
for the health and extra slow on hit. This also builds into one of your core items.
From there, finish Trinity Force
.
From here pick up an Emblem of Valor
and start building your Stark's Fervor
. The attack speed and lifesteal this item brings will buff your damage output as well as allowing you to heal through a lot of damage.
The final two items of the build are Banshee's Veil
and Sunfire Cape
.
Start by grabbing a Catalyst
and upgrading it to a Banshee's Veil
as soon as you have the money to do so.
For the last item pick up a Giant's Belt
and build it into a Sunfire Cape
. These last two items will give you some serious survivability to finish off the tanky/dps jungling skarner build.

The first skill I pick up is Fracture
because the healing component saves you from dying to blue buff in the beginning of the jungle. By level 3 I pick up all skills so that I am ready for any early ganks or anti-ganks in my jungle.
From there I max out Crystalline Exoskeleton
first, finish off Fracture
second, then Crystal Slash last
, picking up Impale
at ult points 6, 11, and 16.
The small heal increase is not worth the attack speed of the shield in the jungle or in a gank. Combines with a set of M Razors
, leveling the shield/atk speed buff will make for a quicker smoother jungle. It also seriously buffs the passive on Blood Razors
making for even stronger ganks or small group fights.

For masteries I take 1/19/10
Couple reasons I go into the defense tree here:
1. It has an attack speed buff and ability buff which is major for the cycle of abilities that Skarner has
2. The extra armor/mr/dodge allows him to keep his atk speed buff running**
3. Just plain safer
**If Skarner's Exoskeleton
is broken he does not retain the atk speed and movement speed buffs for the full duration.
Attack speed for Skarner is like cooldown reduction with a damage portion because of his passive. A huge portion of his attack speed comes from his Exoskeleton
(which scales of ability power). The ability power bonus help keep the shield from being one shot late game, thereby causing him to retain his attack speed to reset all of his abilities as well as refresh his shield.
Why is this important? Ardor
Increases your champion's attack speed and ability power by {1.33/2.66/4}%.
With 19 points in the defensive tree Skarner forms into a powerful tanky/dps jungler.

The runes I use are pretty standard.
Armor yellow
for sager jungle and useful for any melee champion.
Health quints
for... well, pretty much the same reason.
Attack speed red
and blue
gets me 21% attack speed to start the game, plus 4 from my talents gives me 25% attack speed and about 0.762 (can't specifically remember) attacks/s to start off in the jungle.
This extra attack speed is major for reducing the cooldown of your Fracture
while killing creeps in the jungle.
Items and defensive spec will get you enough magic resit for mid to late game survival to where you don't need to fill your blue runes with MR.

I'm jungling, so I use smite
... I know, mind blowing.
For my second I use ghost
. Not only good for quick early junlging (if you choose to use it in the jungle), but excellent for out of river ganks.
Skarner has no real way to approach champions besides walking up to them, do anything to assist you in getting to them is pretty big for him. Having saying this, flash
could probably also fit the build.. but combining Skarner's Exoskeleton movement speed with ghost
is just too fun when chasing down a carry.

Jungling path is pretty basic.
Start at Big Blue, spam him with your Fracture
whenever you have it off cd. ONLY HIT THE BIG GUY. Turning to heal off little ones is not worth the damage loss on buff golem. Use smite on big golem off course.
After grabbing golem head off to wolves. You can start cycling through your other abilites while at the camps if you wish, though you probably wont need to.
Wraiths and mini golems are your next targets. From there you can back and pick up a long sword
and rotate through wolves, wraiths, golems, and then lizard buff.
Lizard buff can be done on the way to mini golem second time around if your blue is close to running out. Like I said, pretty simple jungling routine.
