To really excel as katarina you need to learn your lane match-ups so you don't get shutdown. You don't necessarily have to try to get a kill in lane because you should focus on getting some items first. Even if you don't have items look for opportunities to roam around the map. Make sure to buy wards and upgrade the trinket at lvl 9.
