Malzahar is very much a DOT fest. He relies heavily on dot (damage over time) but can also deal ALOT of damage to single targets. His two summoner skills are thusly ideally ignite and ghost (ghost being for great escapes).

I've only played him in 3 games so far, and he takes alot of skill to master, but feels very rewarding as a character. So, if you're looking for easy modes characters like Master Yi or Katarina, do NOT play Malzahar, as you will be severely disappointed.

The builds that I've tried range from ability power builds (such as the ony mentioned above) and physical damage builds, and I really can't decide what works best. Perhaps an ability/physical damage/life steal build?
