Start off with a Dorans Ring because its just beast, 100HP for more survivability 15AP and +5 mana regen per 5 seconds. The doran's ring is later sold for other late game equipments.
Next you would want to get a Tear of the Godess because Malzahar is very mana hungry early on, and harassing in the laning phase may drain most your mana if spamming spells. Malzahar without mana is like birds with out wings, in other words, he is useless with no mana.
The rest of the items are pretty self explanatory, in some cases where there is a tank building up magic resist early game, you would want to rush your void staff right after your sorcerer's boots.
Mejai's soulstealer may be a bit of a gamble, only get this if your doing well, if you aren't doing that well, then feel free to skip this item.
The Core Items:
These items are a must get, no matter how the game turns out;
Rabadon's Deathcap
Deathfire Grasp
Sorcerer's Boots
If the other team has alot of CC or that if you find out if you are being focused alot, get Mercury's Treads instead of Sorcerer's boots.

Early game (Before level 6)
Harass with Call of the Void and Malefic visions as much as possible but always remember to count your mana, make sure each time you cast a spell your mana doesn't go under 100 MP, this is just in case for last hitting, or silencing enemies when you're ganked.
Mid game (Level 6 - Level 11)
Okay this is when Malzahar begins to shine, once your ult is ready, just go in and nuke.
Versing a melee dps champion;
Try to lure the enemy as close as possible (they are in their hitting range), this is when you strike, you want to get them close because your skill shots would be easier to aim. Basic attack order is very simple just a roll of the fingers: Q W E R and if necessary ignite. Usually always only attack when your voidling ready on your next spell cast or is already summoned.
Versing another caster;
As versing another caster, silence is key, once you silence their done for, casters are usually squishy and your basic combo will tear them apart really quickly.
Versing a tank;
Malzahar can break up a tank and squish them with out a problem, try harassing with Null Zone but I don't recommend it since the CD of NZ is really long and it costs a lot of mana.
When versing tank just make sure that null zone is on their feet when you ult.

For summoner spells go for Ignite and Ghost or Flash
Ignite, THIS IS FKIN MUST HAVE!!!!!!!! You can STILL be cast this during channeling his ult and it is great for last hitting with your damage over time combo.
Ghost/Flash either is good, it depends on the map you play, for Summoner's Rift i would suggest Ghost instead of flash, because ghost has a shorter CD and there isn't really a big gap that you could flash over, but if you're playing twisted treeline, use flash, you can flash over the wall (dragon on the other side) on top lane, this can give you around a 5 - 8 second gap before your enemies come, this may be enough time for you CD to end or to run.
Clarity is okay on Malzahar due to the point that he is very mana hungry early on but after getting tear of the goddess clarity/ blue golem buff clarity would become useless.
Heal, some people prefer heal since Malzahar is very squishy, 2 things here, once your focused, heal wont save you, and second ignite and ghost are better choices.
Teleport, Malzahar is slow and teleport can help greatly when pushing or getting back into a lane or to another lane. This is an okay spell, wouldn't recommend it though.
All the other spells are **** for Malzahar. Don't get anything else besides these.

Farming is extremely easy with Malzahar, once you have around 300 AP your Malefic Visions can clear entire minion creeps, and it usually gets the last hit, giving you 25-45g. If you find a big mob of minions, you can also use Call of the Void to clear them, just be sure to aim your Call of the Void so that it would hit all/most the minions.
