Why not? It gives survivability, mana and a better damage output, while the Catalyst gives awesome laning sustainability in early game ^^

dude! this build is legit! i've played it twice and i don't even have all tier 3 runes (mostly tier 1 w/3 scattered throughout) and i am doing so well. Usually brand and annie get me when i play maokai but i seriously can own them when i play maokai. I like the teleport on maokai but use clarity as well. If i get blue buff then i'm all set in the game. the masteries also work really well and never thought about buying fon or warmog on maokai. both good beefy items that help tremendously!

Maokai is the only champion i have never lost with, (15-0 in normals). Even thought i didnt use this guide your items are damn near identical to mine. Have to say i like it alot! Also the guide is very very in-depth and i like that.
