Very great build, i find that it works well in middle lane too.

Hey! I'm happy to hear that! With the right match up, I feel she excels extremely well. I find that champions whose only option is to get in close and fight are who we want to play against. I like to play against Zed a whole lot. I haven't tested some match ups, like Vladimir which is bound to be a whole lot harder.

I could certainly record some of my gameplay for you. Any requests on the matchup?

I agree with a lot of things in this guide. And I tried out the Deathfire Touch masteries and I was amazed with the results. I think I just chose the Grasp of the Undying masteries because it was the meta. I think the only thing I did not really agree with is not building a Titanic Hydra on Illoai. I was looking for a first item that provided health and attack damagage on Illoai in my item sets. It came down to three items:

Black Cleaver <---So I don't think this item does enough early game so I don't rush this maybe as 2nd/3rd and so on item or not at all depending on how much armor they have.

So it really came down to

Sterak's Gage
Titanic Hydra

3500 Gold 2700 Gold
Titanic Hydra Sterak's Gage
Health 450 400
AD 35 15-36.25(Depending on Champ level),
HP Reg 100% 0%
Passive cleave scaling with Grants 30 -72.5 AD instead an a shield made up of
health nothing too 30% of your max health for 8 seconds after being burst
special. 45second cool down.

Health - Titanic Gives 50 more HP
AD - Titan gives more until Sterak's is on an Illoai at lv17 then it gives 35AD. I realize that the amount of AD that the passive gives is quite massive, but I prefer consistency.
HP Reg- Underrated stat. Now I am not sure how much health I have with just a Titan Hydra alone, but I am going to choose a safe number like 2000. Illoai is one of those champs with high base health 9.5 - 23.1 HP5 ticks every second. So can be read as 1.9 - 4.62 health per second. Hydra doubles this amount. 3.8 - 9.24 health per second.

Lets say we have a Hydra at lv1 and 2000 HP kind of underestimating here.

2000/3.8 = It takes about 526 seconds or just under 9 minutes to get back to 2000HP, but wait we have Recovery so we actually have 5.8 Health Regen per second

2000/(3.8 + 2.0) = 344 seconds So it takes about just under 6 minutes to get back to 2000HP

My point is that the value may seem small but it really adds up over time and the amount of HP gained over time is even more noticeable when stack with other items with health regen and I am not even talking about Warmog's.

Passive- The cleave on Titanic Hydra is nothing special I will admit, but I see it more of a bonus that has it uses it helps me clear wave to land E's when my tentacles are not around or in reach of the wave to clear it.

Now I know a lot of people build Sterak's for the passive effect, but I feel like the 8 second duration and 45 second cool while it may seem short and while it may be up every teamfight, the shield is to unreliable because it may go off at the wrong moment. Or better yet what if they don't burst you down? How many people actually focus the tank? What if your so fed that you actually wipe out the enemy team before they could get enough hits off to proc the passive? You see I have a reliability problem when it comes to this shield.

Any that was my tangent on Hydra vs Sterak's feel free to agree or disagree. I don't think Sterak's is useless though I think it just depends on your playstyle.

Anyway good guide going to up vote this one I liked everything else about this guide.

Hey, man! Thanks a lot for taking the time to read my guide and give me some feedback. I really appreciate it.

I started to experiment a lot with Deathfire Touch when Jhin was released. It made sense with champions that are able to easily reapply the buff, and Test of Spirit makes it so easy to apply it. Overall, I find it so much more useful than Grasp of the Undying.

Titanic Hydra is certainly a plausible item on Illaoi, but I don't think we get a good use out of the passive. In the patch notes when it was released, Riot talked about how there was a lack of items meant for beefy front liners that primarily dealt damage through their auto attacks. As Illaoi, we deal more than 3/4 of our damage through our abilities. Since we deal a large majority of our damage through our abilities and not auto attacks, we want to build to that strength. So, armor penetration, cooldown reduction, and raw AD all enhance our abilities (CDR for more up time on our abilities, armor penetration to increase our damage by a raw percentage, and AD for our insane total 1.6 ratio on our tentacles). The item that gives every single one of these stats is Black Cleaver. Even if your opponents aren't building armor, they have armor scaling and you will get use out of the passive. As a closing note, I'd like to say that everything I want us to do on Illaoi is to enhance her tentacles. That's the #1 reason I don't build Titanic Hydra.

I think you might have a misconception about Sterak's Gage. It actually gives a flat bonus based on your base attack damage. It gives 26 base attack damage for Illaoi, 52 when the shield is procced. Illaoi isn't a tank in the traditional sense (high cc, disruption, engage / peel function in team fights). She's what we refer to as an aggro tank. If the enemy team does not focus us, we'll wreak havoc simply through damage output. Since we also have increasing sustain the lower in health we get, that makes us a drain tank. We build Sterak's Gage, because it helps us fulfill that role in team fights. If you find that you're not getting focused in fights, it's always an option to buy a different item. Death's Dance is an item similar in function to Sterak's Gage, except it gives you a ton more damage and consistent sustain. It might suit your play style better.

As for health regeneration being an underappreciated stat, I agree. I don't think we care a lot about it on Illaoi, though, since our major concern is having health / sustain in the middle of fights. We want to build for the team fight, or the split push as it may be, since our entire function in a fight is to be an aggro / drain tank. Also, you talk about how we get a good use out of the hp/5 stat over time. Think about how much time we're going to spend in base, how much health we will sustain back, etc. It makes it seem even more inefficient.

What did you think of Greater Mark of Scaling Attack Damage and Greater Quintessence of Scaling Attack Damage? Whenever I pitched this to friends and mentors, they always couldn't wrap their heads around it.
